I have had three that I thought were ribbon quality,
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=28783 which I thought got voted down becuase the central object wasn't in focus, but is part of the reason I liked it so much.
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=31405 which I think got voted down because people didn't see the 2 or 3 dimensional aspect of the right angles. Also part of it was out of focus.
Finally, and the one that I think was mosted robbed on was //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=36230 I don't know why it got voted so low, but it was odd, for me any way, that I got a higher rating from people with cameras, its usually the other way around.

How To Win Article
I think that link is worth reading. It might help you understand how other photos win and the photo you felt was amazing didn't. I really enjoy reading that site and it's helped me a lot.

Well, I like this post because I like maths and I think it is important to do balances here and there to understand how things are going, if possible.
So I'll do a quick resume of my challenges here (they are just six, the last six actually: I am going to be a constant pain in the ass.. you know..).
My first is the one I love more for obvious reason. The outcome was not a robbery, in fact, it was a MASSACRE:Sweet Dreams vote: 3.412, place 248/251.
It did manage to have 5 favourites so far (possibly making it the most controversial pic of the site) and, actually, that's how I discovered the best of DPC: its real people.
Then I had three pics which were rated between 4.2 and 4.7 and I think they were lucky pics, because they were pretty mediocre and I would have rated them between 3 and 4! =)
Then I had the scent of a robbery with this:Primary Tool, a pic on which I worked by staging it (the only one I staged so far) and that I believe could have deserved to pass the 6 average milestone.
However, speaking of robbery, it is likely that I am having my real first robbery in the current "Nostalgia" challenge.
I had the classic lucky because original shot and, so far, I just got very nice comments (some enthusiastic), while all my previous pics had lots of (deserved) critics. Well.. regardless the positive comments the current average of this pic is 4.8 and I am pretty sure that there is some people out there which will reckon that it is unappropriate.
CONCLUSION: Although, of course, there are wonderful pictures, nice pictures and pictures that just are not that nice, my impression is that even when I will shot a perfect pic there is nothing which can grant me that I will go close to a ribbon. I mean.. I could even win a blue one but, considering what luck is required, I would prefer to win the lottery. =))))))

I didn't think I'd ribbon or anything, but I was very disappointed by the results of My Desolation Photo. Most people didn't get how this represented desolation, thus the incredibly poor score.
Lesson learned though -- make sure the challenge category is TOTALLY OBVIOUS, or suffer the consequences.

My pic in the "Nostalgia" challenge which I mentioned in this post ended 135 of 252 with an average vote of 5.010 (my second best BTW).
To answer your question: "Did I get robbed?"
Well... I suppose that only the thief knows the answer to that question (and I like to think that there is no theft).
If, instead, the question was: "Did you feel robbed?", which sounds slightly different but, in fact, it is enormously different, then the answer is: no I don't, even if I think that the pic could have done better.. after all, I didn't receive any critique that let me understand what I got wrong this time.
I think that the current voting system can generate that (probably wrong) feeling of being robbed though and I aim to implement a different one sooner or later to check if I was wrong or not.

Don't you think the title hurt you somewhat? This was a great shot for the challenge. I may have used simply "Farm Life" or "Country Life".
"Men at work (but girls just wanna have fun)"
Seems like this could have been damaging to your vote on the female side? I grew up in a country life and this is not the way it was :)
Just my $0.02 worth;

...I just learned it the hard way, prompted by the 14 _ones_ I got on my submission for the nostalgia challenge. So I would say: make sure the challenge category is totally obvious _and_ don't post-process in a visible way. :)
To redeem myself, today I shot... yet another spider. ;-)

I certainly hope people didn't take it that way. The title was a wry attempt at humor based on 80's music (my favorite music decade!) -- Men At Work being the name of a band, and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" being the song by Cindi Lauper. (I like to try and be creative with my titles when I can.)
The title was meant to describe this particular photograph, not to describe what "Country Life" is in general. I thought it was quite appropriate given the situation.
Your point is very interesting, however, since it is something I never would have thought of.

I'm really new to this, and haven't entered a challenge yet. I see alot of talent and hope to keep up, but I believe this is all very subjective. I know when I've got the right shot because it speaks to me. My hope is that it speaks to others in the same way, but I understand that is not always the case. Robbed doesn't apply because you all liked your own shot and your implying some sort of conspiracy or something preventing you from winning... |

Here it is months later and this photo still irrates me all the 1's simply because it was a flag the technical merit wasn't even considered by those giving it a 1. I didn't expect a ribbon but I didn't expect all those ones on that photo. Yes I am still very bitter over that photo and the comments and scores! |

you haven't been robbed until you have a blue ribbon snatched from you in a painful way ;) From first to DQ in 24 hours is a robbery!
