I'm looking to get a teleconverter for the nikon 80-200 f/2.8 lens. I dont really know much about them other than it extends the distance of the lens by 1.4 or 2.0. I've also read that most lenses lose their autofocus when using a TC. Is there a TC for the 80-200 that keeps the AF and is pretty good? If not what would you recommend as a good TC for that lens?

okay here is the word...I am in the same market so have done research...
1.4 - lose 1 stop
1.7 - lose 1.5 stop
2.0 - lose 2 stops
Go with this version, except at the TC you wish.
TC-20E II
I am probably gonna finish at the 2.0 because of my VR. But under the features tab, your lens does fall into the compatible category so that is good. AF will work. Just read thru what the description says. Good TC. Most people would recommend the 1.4, but I believe all are solid quality. F/stop issue is biggest concern....

This thread has some TC info that might interest you from a few days back.
I bought a Kenko 1.5 that did a pretty good job on the AF and was reasonably fast too. It was under $90 so I can't complain but the Nikons cost a ton more so I assume they kick butt at $300-400 plus. |

Is your 80-200 AFS? If so, you can use a Nikon TC...if not, you can't use the Nikon TC (the 80-200 ED, D ED, and one-ring push/pull cannot use Nikon's TC)...
I have read that Kenko's 1.4 TC works with the non AFS 80-200, but I can't guarantee it.

I dont have the AF-S, it's the ED AF-D with the tripod collar. The features for the lens states it can use the Nikon TC-14b and the TC-201 or TC-14a but only with manual focus and vignetting may occur. I'm a really big fan of autofocus. I may take a look at the kenko one.
