I hereby move to ban all pictures involving wine glasses, water glasses, martini glasses, or any other recepticles of consumed liquid for a period of at least two challenge cycles...
These shots can be very interesting, but it just seems that they're over-used. I've noticed the same thing with ripples in the water... let's start thinking outside of these visual cliches =)
Happy snapping!

they might be over used but when done correctly and technically perfect, they're great shots.
have you tried shooting any of the ones you listed below?

As long as people keep scoring them high, people will keep submitting them. |

I hope that the post didn't seem too condescending, I bow down to those with superior skills of photography, but it would be nice to see less repetition.
Here's probably one of the only shots of my own that I like including such subject matter, though I admittedly haven't played too much with the concept...

A lot of these shots are "committed" by people who have never done them before, and want to try their hands at such a striking technique. This is pretty much true of ANY popular, high-scoring technique or approach. The success of Manny (Librodo) spawned a wave of portraits-with-scarves, and the onslaught of Joey ushered in an "age of grunge". There are plenty of other examples. It's the nature of the beast.
I hear noise, myself, about "skiffs 'n sunsets" all the time, but hey that's something I have a lot of and enjoy shooting :-)

Well why not suggest a glass challenge that says:
Glass
Creatively shoot anything glass
Special Rules: Any glass in the picture may not be a glass object that holds liquid meant for consumption. This means no wine glasses, martini glasses, water glasses, tumblers, or water glasses. Vases are allowed.
That being said, I think doing a cliche water glass shot is very difficult, and anyone who takes the time to try and do it, and does it well should be acknowledged.
Anyways, this is challange suggestions, right?

Ha, from the title of the thread and the fact that it is in the CHALLENGE SUGGESTIONS category, I thought you were going to suggest a challenge with glasses (as in, spectacles) as the theme. You didn't, but it sounds like an interesting challenge to me anyway. |

Consider this a loud plea for sanity: Save Rikki! Save Rikki! We can ill afford the loss of such a useful verb from our collective vocabulary :-)

A few weeks ago someone suggested we take less flower pics. Then sunsets etc. Now glass pics. Pretty soon we won't have anything to shoot ;-) |

I swear I will never do dumping-shell-into-wine-glass-shots again. Whatever.
It might be a cliche, but I enjoyed making the shot for the SLS challenge. Is that a crime?
I'm here for fun, you know. Not to be told what not to do.

Ah, I appologize for posting this in the Challenge Suggestions portion of the forums... for some reason I took the title to mean that this is an area where suggestions about the challenges in general could be posted.
There's nothing wrong with having a personal style or tendency to shoot certain subjects; personally, I love automobiles and love taking pictures of them. My point was just that stepping outside our own lines of tendency can turn up some interesting results.
I hope I haven't offended or made anyone angry, this is a great site and I am, after all, a newbie throwing out his first opinion in a forum. =D

Well, if people are gonna submit glasses and similar items and suck at doing them, you should probably encourage it. Like look at my one and only attempt. I hate glasses too, both by me and by others. But at least I can admit that others do them well, and I don't.

I won't support a ban on any kind of photo (except those deemed illegal by the federal government). I will say that I reward originality in my voting, and leave it at that.
Tangentially, I wonder if a wine glass themed challenge would be interesting and get it largely out of everyone's systems for awhile?
