I am just finishing my voting on the 262 submissions for the Seasonal challenge and am wondering if I am approaching this correctly. I have been voting more like a critique site, with 1 being complete failure and 10 being complete success. But, this is a competetion so maybe I should be voting on a curve! There cannot be 262 10's if the shots are all successful and there cannot be 262 1's if I don't like anything. This is a competetion, so there must be winners and losers, right? Any thoughts? |

Yes.. use this curve:
All full black frame photos, photo containing kids, pets flowers, all but one color desaturations, beer, bugs, and old people should be scored a 1. Everything else should just be voted randomly between 2 and 10.

That would have simplified the "Seasonal" voting significantly. |

OK John,
Either you are joking (somewhat) or you are losing it. I've seen some wonderful shots here with all of those topics (except the full frame black, and desats are getting old). Sure there are plenty of mediocre 'snapshots' of kids, pets, flowers, and old people, etc, but there have been some high quality, artfully done shots of those same subjects. The ratio of snapshots to WOW-shots within these topic groups is not good, but there have been some awesome (even winning) shots in these groups.
...I do agree with 1's for full frame black or stuffed animals, which you forgot to mention.

I think it IS a critique site. You can look at each picture individually and score it. Most people (I think) do keep in mind the other shots though so that they have something to go by. If I score a whole challenge without giving anything above a 7 then I will go back and pick out shots to bump up. I try to give a couple of 10s and 9s regardless of if I actually think they are flawless, perfect shots.
I think that if you do score each one individually then you will end up with a bell curve. Most shots are somewhere around average with a few that really stand out. |
