I upgraded my computer to XP yesterday. When I use photoshop and open the file/open or file/save as dialogs, my view defaults to 'thumbnails' rather than 'list' or 'details'. I can change the view while in this window, but I can't figure out how to make photoshop default to something other than thumb view... any ideas?

I would also like to know how to make a "Default" in this case, but for the opposite reason, I want thumbnails, not list.. :)

I never got into the habit of using adobes Bridge..

I don't really think this is a PS thing... it is an XP thing. Since you are not set in your ways yet with XP yet then try this... Hope it does what you want:

1-Open ANY folder

Across the top of the open dialog box you should see a row of icons. The rightmost one is a "view" icon. It is just right of the "new folder" icon

2-Select the view you want in the drop down menu in the "view" icon popup menu or simply right-click anywhere inside the folder and select the display option from the displayed popup list

3-Select "Tools->Folder Options..." from the top menubar

Now you will see three tabs.

4-Click the middle tab titled "view"

At the top you will see something labeled "Folder Views".

5-Click the "Apply to all folders" button

That should change the default view setting for all the folders on your computer to your intended default view. When you open in Photoshop it should be displayed in the default view.

Btw, Any folder displays you want different from your default setting are set for each individual folder (and maybe all folders inside that folder) separately.

That works for all folders using windows explorer, but it doesn't cover my dialog boxes in photoshop :(

I have narrowed the problem down some....

I only am forced into the thumbnail view for images that exist in my MY PICTURES folder. Everything else takes the windows default except stuff in that folder. I DO get the details view on that folder in windows explorer, but not in photoshop.

When you click open file, there is a little icon near the top of the open box called view menu when you overmouse it. Click the list arrow beside the icon and select how you want your files to show.

That works until I close the dialog box and open it back up. It reverts to thumbnail view.

Try clicking the Use Adobe Dialog button at the bottom of the Open File window.

I don't have a "use adobe dialog" button... I'm using v7.

I Just tested this (I think MS thinks that if we have photos we must want to see thumbs when browsing)

This will change the folder and subfolders (if you select apply to subfolders)

Choose Open... in Photoshop (I did test in Digital Image Pro)
Right Click in an open area where the Thumbs are (not on a thumb)
Choose Properties
Click on the Customize tab
With the "What kind of folder do you want" drop-down
Choose Documents (for any file type)
Click Apply
Click on Details from the View Menu
Click Cancel
Click Open again and it should be in Detail view

To get back to thumbs do the same again but choose Pictures for the folder type and choose thumbs instead of Details from the View Menu.

There is probably an easier way but I haven't found it (for you...I use thumbs) yet.

Edit: this would would work for any of the multimedia folders (videos, music, etc...)

I did these steps, and it doesn't appear to work in photoshop. I'm still getting thumbnails. When I go back to check that setting, it is still on 'documents' but i'm still seeing thumbnails.

I'm beginning to thing this problem can't be fixed :(

Try renaming Desktop.ini in your "My Pictures" folder to something else.

when in my pictures try right clicking 1 of your folders and create an association with photoshop that should work. you'll have to right click on a picture open properties to get there

Sorry John I think I misled you with my Desktop.ini suggestion. It seems Microsoft changed the way they handle some shell customization features when they released XP.

I'm not sure but you might be able to change this by right-clicking on the folder, then selecting the Customize tab. I can't verify this though because I'm still running Win2K on this system.
