Been playing around with my new 30D, and after having it a whole week, I finally had a chance *tonight* to dump my pics onto my computer (suffice it to say, it has been an incredibly hectic week with no play time :(

Anyway, I was horrified when I found 3 shots with with a vertical line through them. Initially, I thought they were corrupted during the copy to my computer, but they're actually on the card that way. So I'm wondering what else it might be and what I should do about it.

Here's one of the shots with the line through it (and yes, I apoligize, I know it's a horrible shot), along with a close-up of the offending line as it appears in the lower right corner of the photo.
And crop:

I suspect this happened when the card was being written to, since it's actually on the card this way. I have no idea what to do about it, though, since I don't know whether the card is at fault or (GULP!) my brand new baby camera. Any thoughts? I'm sure someone around here has seen this, and I'm also sure that someone has posted about this in the forum before, but my searches returned nothing, probably because I just don't know what to call this problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Try isolating the problem. Is it happening on all your cards? Or just this one? If on all, it's the camera. If just this one, try a re-format of the card while within the camera and see if that helps. You might have a small corrupt space on the card from re-writing on it over several shoots. Did it happen only on this shoot, or over several shots from images taken in a bunch of different locations and lighting conditions?

I'm not entirely sure that is a "data" problem.

Since files are written much like the english language from left to right top to bottom, it seems kind of odd that a file would be corrupted to have a vertical line and especially one that wide. Also it appears to have some blur to it.

You say this happened in 3 shots on the card. Out of how many? And do they have anything in common that you can think of?

Maybe there was a stray piece of thread or a hair or something on the lens?

What has really got me confused is that the wall over the door doesn't line up on the left and right sides of the line.

Thanks for your thoughts, Laurie and Leroy.

This was the first time I've used this card. I put 277 shots on it(a mix of JPEG and RAW) before dumping it onto my computer. I have noticed 3 shots with this problem on the card, but it is possible that there are more. (Due to problems with my CD-ROM drive, I can't install the Canon software on my machine right now, and so I'm limited to looking at the other RAW shots in the camera at the moment. Actually, maybe I'll hook it up to my TV in a little bit...

Anyway, 2 of the shots with the problem are JPEGs, and happened one right after the other. The other is a RAW shot that I took maybe 20 or so minutes earlier. I do have another card in there now, and have only taken 4 shots on it so far. No problems yet, but it's too soon to tell.

Laurie - I wish it were a hair or something like that on the lens! :) But alas, it is not.

And Leroy, yes, I'm confused, too, about the misalignment. At first, I thought it was because of missing data on that vertical line, but it seems too misaligned to be that.

Will let you know shortly if there are any more shots on the card like that.

Thanks for your help!

Guys - I am soooo sorry!

I know what the problem is, and it has nothing to do with my camera, or the CF card. It has everything to do with me being a moron and forgetting WHAT I shot.

Those three shots were all taken in a mirror. That gray vertical line is the mirror panel edge. The mirror panels at our T'ai Chi school are uneven, so the image they reflect back is a bit misaligned when its split between two panels.

I'm so sorry to have wasted your time and sent you on a wild goose chase. Thanks, Leroy and Laurie, for trying to help. I do appreciate it.

OMG, THAT IS TOO FUNNY! ROFLMAO!

Well, blonde moment aside, I'm glad there is nothing wrong with your camera or your CF card. You may want to see if your mind is still under warranty though :-P

*still laughing*

I'm happy to have provided the entertainment for the evening. :) And of course, happy there's nothing wrong with my camera or CF card.

Also, although the mind is no longer under warranty, I'm not so sure I'd send it back. People pay good money for entertainment like this, and I've got lifetime front row seats! ;)
