these are the 3-yr-old cousins of murdered chip ellis, fascinated by one of the 1000s of butterflies released at the celebration of life ceremony held tonight in his honor. chip was a senior at midlothian high school, due to graduate in two weeks. for reasons unknown, he was murdered by a classmate this past week. all i have read and heard about chris is that he was a very caring, loving, giving person whose short life touched many, many lives. he was loved and respected, and his absence will be felt deeply.

this was shot for the midlothian exchange, and will run on the front page of this week's edition. of all the things i could have shot, this one seemed most appropriate.

go hug your kids. you can't protect them. you can only love them and pray for them.

As a parent this would be the worst possible pain to go through. My heart goes out to all family and friends as well as the community. My boys know how much they are loved and they leave for school everyday with a hug and kiss from me. You just never know if it is going to be the last time you see them. Just so sad.

Thanks, skip... I've been following this story and it's just really awful. I appreciate the opportunity to see this photo.

That is a sad story. Very nice pic of the boys. Too bad you couldn't have gotten the hugging people in the background without the guy with oddly placed hands.
Still very touching.

This is great photojournalism. The butterfly/moth is often used to represent the soul. I don't think you could have found a more fitting moment.

The perfect choice of picture, Skip. Shows innocence and fragility - very fitting for the situation.
