I'm guessing the judge (I hope it was just one) is REALLY into photos of dog figurines with men's legs in them. That's my only guess.

Either that or they were drinking with American_Horse when they judged the photos.

A thousand pounds for that is ... difficult for me to believe. Maybe some of our British users can help us to understand it better.

My observation, for what it's worth, is that no one who has posted to this thread has ever entered a photo competition outside dpchallenge.
I'm also wondering if anyone has taken a good look at that image and made an attempt to understand it at any level. I can certainly see that photo winning a competition of that nature. It's one of those photos that goes beyond what you see. That doesn't happen around here too often, now does it? ;)

Let me get this straight- You have observed everyone who posted to this thread NOT entering a photo competition outside of DPC? Obviously ridiculous, so I'll guess you meant that you assume nobody has. Hmmm, still ridiculous. Guess I'll just let that one go.

For the record, I looked at it every which way for quite awhile, simply because I didn't understand it on any level. Instead of making assumptions and casting your own aspersions, it would be more helpful if you provided your own in depth critique explaining the levels you seem to understand and what specifically, you see in the image that justifies a top placement in that competition.

Maybe you just have to be British to see it. ;-) And I'm sure I'm not the only one that has entered many photo competitions outside of DPC.

I woudln't dare post my opinion of this photo after the general consensus here has decided that it's crap.

Why not? I was being a bit facetious, but I'm seriously willing to listen. And I am really curious if you meant what you said or if you were just using this as an opportunity to take a whack at DPC voters. :)

It's an ok snapshot... I'll give it that much, but in a competition it's CRAP.
And yes, I've entered (and won) several photo competitions with my own crap... LOL
There is absolutely NO WAY you could convince me that that photo has any artistic merit.

You're willing to tell everyone that they clearly lack experience and that their opinion of the photo is wrong but not to share your own? Pfft. |

Ok, I stared at it again for five minutes straight. Tilted my head, squinted, crossed my eyes, put on rose colored glasses and I still don't see a single appealing thing about it.
Pffft. (the sound of my match lighting my torch) ;-P |

Yup, they were drunk or perhaps eating shrooms.

I read that after the initial post and only made me more suspicios that the whole thing is a hoax or something.
"the winning image made me smile; it represents a working class culture that is always worth documenting."

To me, this photo is very.. ummm... "Man Ray" ish.... It shows me that some 'style' has been studied and understood to a great degree. This photo isn't about eye candy. It's about an unusual juxtaposition that creates enough conflict to make the viewer ask and try to understand 'why' at the same time.
This photo is, in our terms, 'outside the box'. I didn't see much unusual stuff in the rest of the photos shown in that competition. I didn't see anything that really stood out as innovative either. It's possible that the judges thought this to be the case as well. They may have appreciated the view.
The photo definitely is not a postcard shot. It's not something most people would hang on their wall either. It's not a photo that has immediate impact when it's not viewed for what it is.
I think Man Ray was a master of the 'surreal' still life. One of his shots came to mind when I viewed this one. It was a still life of a metronome with an eyeball on the rocker. I don't know why that particular image came to mind, but it did.
We all don't look at photography the same way. Sometimes we simply must ask 'why' and try to find the answer, as we are doing with this particular photo. Sometimes being familiar with what has come before us helps.

Fair enough. You're welcome to your opinion as am I and the others. I still completely disagree and think the image is garbage rubbish. But I'm sure many feel that way about a great many of my images. |

I can understand Dadaism./Surealism, but still this just doesn't cut it. And, now I'm just really thinking the judges were high.

I have an appreciation for Man Ray, and this particular photo screams of that style. I like it, but I CAN understand why most don't.

*shakes hands, apologizes for being rude*
FWIW, I am not familiar with Man Ray except as a villainous character on a Spongebob episode.
*oops, further reveals his lack of artistic sophistication* |
