RALEIGH – The North Carolina Aquariums’ annual Underwater Photography Contest gets under way again this year, but with changes that will allow non-divers to participate.
IMPORTANT CONTEST ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Only non-professional photographers may enter. The deadline for submitting entries is December 31, 2003. Winners will be announced on or before March 31, 2004.
Each slide, print, or digital entry must be accompanied by a written statement indicating the photographer̢۪s name, address and phone number, plus details about the photograph: identification of species shown, the name of the aquarium exhibit, underwater dive site or wreck, and the depth at which underwater photos were taken.
Prints must be four inches by six inches or larger. Digital entries cannot be accepted unless they are JPEG files, four inches by six inches at 300 DPI or greater. Higher resolution files are preferred.
Mail entries to Photo Contest, North Carolina Aquariums, 417 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. All mailed entries must be postmarked by December 31, 2003 to be eligible.
Digital images may be submitted on CD-ROM, or e-mailed to ncacontest@ncmail.net.
No entry fee is required.
Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional photographers and marine biology professionals. All entered photographs will become property of the North Carolina Aquariums and may be used with appropriate photo credits for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, exhibit graphics, promotional brochures, educational publications, and associated materials.
Photos will not be returned. North Carolina Aquarium and North Carolina Aquarium Society employees and their relatives are not eligible to enter.
Administered by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the state̢۪s three Aquariums are designed to promote a greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of North Carolina̢۪s diverse aquatic environments.
For last year̢۪s photo entries visit the North Carolina Aquariums web site at //www.ncaquariums.com/files/photocontestwinners-02.htm

I'll mail them a print of the photo rather than a digital version. |

John,
Make sure you read their prof. requirements. I have found in the past week or so that by a lot of definitions (Mountain State Fair, Local Arts Council), you would probably be considered a professional. :-/

I'm no where near being a 'professional' yet. To be a professional, i have to have a certain percentage of my total income coming from photography. |

yuh...I think you'd have to sell enough prints to say ummmmm ... pay for a red hummer to be considered professional :)

That is the general understood definition. In a couple of shows that I have entered around here, I discovered that there are some other definitions floating around. For one, if any income was derived from photography, they classified you as a pro. For another, if you accepted assignments for fee, or regularly sold your work. Crazy yes. For me, at one show, I had to enter the professional class because I accepted an "assignment" one time, have prints for sell (dpcprints), and because my husband designs web sites on the side and we offer digital photography as one of our "services."
Doesn't mean that I agree with it (I don't, because if anyone is no where near being a professional, it is me. I don't even consider myself an amateur, hardly), but it has caused me to enter the "professional" class a couple of times, now. Looking at their website, they don't offer guidelines about what makes a pro, so I would assume they are using the guideline you stated. Wish everybody did. :-/

I checked their website and there are no outlines as to what 'professional' means. I'm gonna send them a photo and I may look for some more opportunities to do more before the end of the year... it's a freebie to enter and if they reject me, thats fine too :) |
