I had a local assignment where the city of Vista is hanging 3x9 banners of fallen soldiers in Iraq. The shots came out so nice the editor is putting them out on the AP wire. Wish me luck. That would be a dream come true to get picked up by another major publication. It's already an incredible honor to be shooting for the local paper so can you imagine...Time, New York...wow. |

AP wire is a pool of news and photos that is shared throughout the world. Agencies pay to be a part of the pool and share media. The original journalist gets credit and can negotiate pay depending on the type of media and contract they have with the host agency. |

Good one Nick ... what are your copyrights when something like that happens. Do you still ownt the copyright and will you get the
a) credit on all published copies
b) the royalties

As far as I know I definately get the credit, as far as royalties the editor put in a contact before copy to print. As far as media goes I think it's fair game. Still don't understand all of the finer details of who pays and who doesn't with the AP wire stuff. I'd be happy just to get published. |

Congrats Nick.
Another in the ranks we can say "We knew him when..." about now.
(The pics I have of you may just come in handy someday)

w2g, nick! good luck!
i'm not an 'expert', i can only relate what i was told by the ap desk here. basically, when you license an image to the ap, you are giving them permission to distribute the image throughout their network of subscribers. you get paid by the ap, one time, for whatever you agree to. if the ap wants it exclusively, they will pay more. if they don't want it exclusively, you are free to sell/license it to others. unless specifically contracted otherwise, you retain the copyright to your images. they may pay as little as $50 or as much as $50,000--it just depends on the shot (i don't know the specifics, but i heard that a guy here in richmond (years ago) was paid $20,000 for an image of frank sinatra collapsing on stage with a heart attack--just because it was the only know photo of the incident).
as for credit, yes, your name will be associated with the image in the ap system, but, unfortunately, it is up to the individual publication as to whether or not they run your name, or simply credit the ap. |
