Give your husband a 10, girl! Wouldn't he do the same for you?
Seriously, over at photosig, I never critique my brother's stuff and he doesn't critique mine. Heck, I get MAD when someone leaves a critique that I don't like for my brother. We do, however, leave comments for eachother. |

you are probably right Jaded. I hear your husband can be a right ass, saying things like "what do you mean you voted it a 5? if you thought it was a 5 you should have told me before I entered the damn thing!" and storming off. |

I pose a new question. Is it good to vote on a challenge you are in? So far I don't vote on challenges I'm in, because there tends to be a bias towards your photo, even if you try not to. Especially if you feel you have a really good photo (which if you didn't feel your photo was good, why would you enter it into a challenge).
My question doesn't really stem from this site, but from a different site (I won't mention names). On the site you can see what scores you recieved in the last seven days (and i check it every day) and the level of the person who voted for you (not their names, just the level...a higher level means more awards won). What I noticed is that people on with a higher level voted the photo higher (6 and 7's) and people with lower levels voted it (5 and 6's). But there was one person with the lowest level who voted it a 2. One 2 can bring your average down dramatically. I actually sent a request for a comment a week ago and no reply. My only guess to the reason why is that he/she has a photo in the same category or everyone else voting is blind. |

Lately, when I do vote, it tends to be on the challenges I've entered so I can scope out the competition. I still give the best images 9 - 10 scores and the worst ones, well... rarely less than a 3. My own score or placement is not a factor. My wife will sometimes look over my shoulder and say, "Hey! Why'd you give that a 10? It's not as good as yours," so I'm sure that type of comparison voting happens. I tell her I gave it a 10 because it deserves a 10, and I can't control the scores other people give my entry. IMO, as long as you're voting on the merits of the photos, it shouldn't matter whether you've entered the same challenge.

There are some people here who don't vote on challenges they have entered, but I don't agree. I vote on the challenges I've entered and I'd like to encourage others to do the same.
The people who have entered a challenge are precisely the people I want to vote on my images. They have given thought to the challenge topic and can vote and give comments with more sophistication.
In addition, if the most active photographers here exclude themselves from most of the votes, then the pool of voters represents the less active photographers. I'd rather have the votes of the most active people.
I also think more votes is better in general.
I don't vote on pictures when the photographer is a friend and know that it is their picture.

I think it depends on the person. I tend to vote on every challenge I enter, and give comments to the 1st 25 pictures that randomly show up. Sometimes this is very hard.
I choose to vote on challenges I enter because then I see how my shot stacks up against others. When the voting is over I've seen all the pictures and better understand how mine fits into the ranking.
It's actually easy for me to give a high vote on a good picture, even if I've entered. I know what went into making mine, and can appreciate somebody who did it better. The hard part is giving out the low votes, especially if it's one of the 1st 25. When I comment, I try to tell what I like and don't like, and improvements that would work for me. When a picture is poorly composed, blurry, awful lighting, etc. it's sometimes hard to find the good things to talk about. |

How do you vote for images that didn't follow the basic editing rules?
If I suspected it of not following the basic editing rules, then I only took of 1-2 points depending on how obvious it was. |

If it is a basic editing challenge, you recommend the photo for validation, explaing WHY you think basic editing was not followed. However, you are suppose to vote AS IF THE PICTURE WERE LEGAL. It's in the rules somewhere... You are not suppose to mark down if you think there was illegal editing. I would recommend going back and requesting validation from the SC and voting on the pictures as if they were legal. If basic editing was not followed, the pictures will be DQed

The rules say that you are to vote as if everything is legal. If you suspect rules violations, you can request a validation for a photo by clinking on the link under it. You should still vote as if it was legal. If it's not legal, it will be removed.
Edit: I was extra slow that time.

Some people say they don't vote on the ones they enter because they don't think they can be totally objective. But I think that's a poor excuse. When you vote you are supporting the site and the community just as when you leave comments, or contribute to theses forums, etc. We need all the voters we can get, no one should be discouraged, the more the better.

It's fairly new and still going through some growing pains. The admin has made several changes lately (mostly for the better but not all) and continues to fine tune the site. He does seem to be responsive to people's ideas. Let's hope that issues of fairness in the voting system will be addressed soon, there's a lot of room for improvement.

How long time does it take to get a validation.
Not so long ago I requested a validation and it took 4 days.
When submitting picture that you know a lot of people will think is a cut and paste or braking the rules in any other way you would like a validation from the start.
IMO the field of requesting validation is missing when posting a picture to a challenge. Validation needs to be done quickly because a lot of people are not following the rule of voting as if the picture was legal.
