Just starting out in photography and was wondering the do's and don'ts of watermarking photos. I want to deter people from using my pictures, but I don't want to detract from the picture.
If they really want the picture it's usually easy to photoshop it out or crop it... Thanks. |

Watermarks detract from the photo.
To keep people from being able to do much with your photo, only post small versions of the photos online and save them at the very minimum quality level required.

whether they can clone it out depends on where you put it on the image. Most will put a large, very transparent one diagonal across the image. If you do it light enough it won't detract from the image too much. When posting to the web there are a variety of things you could do like slicing the image up. this makes your image into small pieces and if they try to right click and download they have to do it on each section then put it back together...but if they use print screen and copy it that way they get the entire image.
I would also consider using the copyright embedding function within PhotoShop. It adds secret information to your image that can be traced to see if the image is being used somewhere else, but I think that is only if they are using it in an online venue, if they print it then who would know.
It is a tricky and bother some area that I'm sure someone here will be able to help more with.

This is good advise. |

That's what I do... I don't like watermarks. Photos are 450x long on my website.

I realize that if people wanted to copy/print/whatever the images from my website they would anyway but to make ME feel better, I type a copyright notice on the lower right corner usually and then fade it so it's not too obvious. Like I said, this could be cloned/cropped/healed but it makes ME feel better.
