I entered this in DPC CInema:
...but I wonder if any of these would have been a better choice.
I dressed my youngest two kids in old clothes that were stained (yes, the shirt WAS dirty and stained and dingy, even if you didn't think so) and didn't match very well, and allowed them to go barefoot (yikes). We went to an old abandoned stretch of buildings downtown and did all kinds of shots. The boys had a blast, mostly because I let them get dirty I think. They were awesome models, showing all kind of emotions for me when I asked. I was so proud that they were able to do that for me.
I guess I kind of missed the mark, as the shot I entered doesn't seem authentic enough to work, but it was a good experience in working with the kids and trying to create an alternate reality through photography.
edit: Thanks kiwiness for changing the title! :)

No, I'm an idiot... It's DPC Cinema. It's too early and not enough coffee. :)

I think my favourites are the one you entered and the first outtake, mostly the first outtake.
They are all really, really good photo's though.
Well done.

The second outtake
is the one over the rest that makes me think "real" and "theres a story here with these two, and I am intrigued to know how it turns out." Plus its crystal clear and the contrast draws you first to the sad dirty face of the foremost little boy.
Your entry is good though, but it looks very... familiar? Maybe it lost some of its emotional UMPH in that its a familiar pose - the small child with the knees drawn up - for photographs of kids. I'm thinking it may have been the initial impact of the photo before reading the title. I felt "cute kid photo" before I felt "worried for his wellbeing" on the first glance at your entry - yet in the outtake I see "older brother being protective, sad, dirty, why??? I hope they are OK" before the teddy bear and his big eyes make me feel his cuteness.
Thats just my thinking though... I'm certainly no expert into voter psychology....

Thanks for the feedback so far...I almost entered the second outtake (it was my personal favorite of the series) but I didn't know if it was too contrived.
Any other thoughts?

Given the title of your entry I think you made the correct choice. For me the second choice is this one:

Hey Laurie, I'm not sure if any of the other shots would have done well in this challenge, but regardless, they are GREAT shots! The dumpster shot is hilarious! Thanks for sharing! |

I hate to agree, but it is a tough call. I really Love these shots...I love the sepia toned one the most.
But there is something that feels like clean kids posed in a desperate environment here. The poverty or desperation or whatever doesn't feel true.
This is strictly opinion, mind you, and it is such an esoteric kind of thing.
I love the pictures, tho, and it is not a bad thing that your kids do not look like they should be wards of the state! :)
