I am interested in seeing photos taken with an actual softbox, either homemade or commercial. Particularly in size 32" x 32" or smaller. I'm not talking about umbrella type soft boxes or large ones for portraits, but mostly for smaller objects or subjects.
I am particularly intrerested also in why you chose to take your photo in a softbox rather than without it. I am looking to learn the lighting techniques as well. What type of lights you use, wattage, lamp, positioning, etc. Feel free to post a photo of your set up, if you have one.
Thanks!

Thanks! I did a search on softboxes but not light boxes. However, most are a bit old as to photos shown. Anyone have some recent photos using a smaller type light box? |

Are you talking about light tents that you put objects in and then shine lights on the outside to get diffuse lighting? Light tents are especially useful when photographing shiny objects that reflect their surroundings. The light tent has no edges to show up in the reflections--it is all an even white color.
You might be interested in some assignments I did for a lighting course. Assignment 3 was to photograph a shiny metal object. I built an enclosure that functions as a light tent using plastic panels from fluorescent ceiling fixtures.

Several months ago I constructed a light tent by following these instructions. Here is an example from my portfolio:
As wheeledd mentioned, it is useful for photographing metallic objects. In a critique of my Knife Fork Spoon challenge entry, shaver suggested that I construct one. This was my entry:
I would like to redo this using a light tent to see the difference. |

Thanks guys. Well, it seems to me that a light tent is the same as a softbox. I have seen them advertised as softboxes but not light tents. The softboxes I am referring to are completely enclosed where there is a hole in the front for your lense. Then you place a light on both sides on the outside.
Love the images though, and I looked over the assignments for the links. Interesting stuff. Thank you. |
