Someone sent me a PM about the G5, which actually is my brother's (mtreit) and I ended up doing a little comparing and thought I'd share with everyone.

Actually it's my brother's (mtreit on DPC) but I used it for a few weeks until I broke down and bought a Coolpix 5700.

Having used both of these cameras I would say there are pros and cons in both. The G5 is a sweet camera. It's small, very intuitive (especially compared to the 5700!) and takes great photos. I think that if cost is a factor a G3 is really just as good unless you actually need to print out very large photos and honestly need that extra megapixel.

I went with the 5700 because I really wanted a good zoom and the Nikon beats everyone out for the best optical zoom. It takes great clear pictures and has a lot of nice features. It has an ISO 800 and Bulb that the Canon doesn't have. However the Canon comes with a remote...you have to buy one seperately with the Nikon. The Nikon has a very nice EVF that the Canon doesn't have. The Canon's view finder is basically useless. Even with the EVF on the Nikon I find I use the LCD screen most of the time, but it's nice to have the option. The one place the Canon compltely kicks the Nikon's ass is in battery life. The Nikon is a battery eating machine. I have three batteries now and will probably end up with 5 eventually for extended weekend shoots (like camping). My brother could probably do all the shooting he wanted over a weekend with 2 batteries.

I have no regrets having bought the Nikon and would recommend it over the G5 I think. But you have to look at your needs. If you really want a compact camera with loads of battery life go with the G3 or G5. If you use zoom a lot, go with the Nikon. If cost is a big factor get the G3.
