DPC Comment Editor

A little while back I noticed that I was starting to notice that I've been skimping out on making comments. As I started to force myself to make more comments I noticed that around 40% of my comments were very simmilar in nature. "Great shot, love the creativity here" etc... Thus I came up with an idea to make a tool that would help me make more comments, or at least start out with some pre-baked comments.

I've since then created the DPC Comment Editor. This is a web based tool that is locally run from your computer (don't worry you don't have to host your own site, it can run from a folder) and "wraps" around the DPC site. It provides a movable window that gives you the ability to drag and drop pre-baked comments that you create onto a comment window, then paste them into the comments box within DPC.

I'm thinking about releasing this tool, free of charge and open source to all DPC users. Though this will require me to spend some extra time in prep work, so before I blast away and do this I'm a waiting a little feed back!

Cheers,
Chad

Wow, I've rarely seen someone work so hard to be so lazy. LOL.

Art Roflmao whipped up something similar awhile back. I'm not sure if anyone has been using it, but the thread is here.

While I probably wouldn't use it, I certainly have to hand it to you for coming up with a creative solution. :-) Man there are some ingenius people around here! In fact, I doubt you'll get too many takers "publicly" - while you might get quite a few more "private" PMs asking for it. ROFL ;-P

No offence but I like to type my comments and personally would be worried if all my comments were possibly auto generated?

Now, if it can be used to post forum responses like "we need some more info" and "I agree with the above but *insert inane response" etc it would be more fun.

In my dark and distant past I used an automated chat room that could carry out a half sensible conversation with the 'subject' whilst I was busy doing other stuff :)

I totally agree .. I would hate if all my comments were auto generated. It would rather be a tool to help make comments on peoples shots that you normally wouldn't

Will have to keep that in mind .. the DPC Comment Editor would be a little different. Instead of giving you a breakdown on how you were rated it would provide a means of creating a few canned comments AND give you the ability to add more specifically for that shot. I've been using it and it really helps comment on shots that you normally would not (eg. "Lighting is too dark" "Focus is soft" etc etc) It also alows you to throw a few together and order then as you choose.

Actually would be good for Critique Club , as we could keep subject headlines and such there. I usually keep my template in a text file and then paste it into the comment box, but this would make it a bit quicker.

That's the truth behind all IT work (but you'll never get me to repeat this statement in public! hehe). You work really hard so that you can be lazy. :D

Ok well it seems that enough people are interested in the tool so I'll release it! yeh! Check out www.chadbrown.ca click on the download link for the commentEditor.zip file download. NOTE this only works for IE and not for Firefox ... I'll hopefully release the firefox friendly version in the next couple of weeks.

See releaseNotes.doc within the zip for a copy of the installation instructions and usage notes.

If you run into any issues or have a suggestion for the next version please post it here

Cheers,
Chad

Installation Notes:

1) Unzip CommentEditor.zip to your local drive
2) Logon to www.dpchallenge.com using your user name and password
3) When commenting on photographs open DPCWrapper.html (within the CommentEditor folder where you unzipped commentEditor.zip)
4) This should place a toolbar at the very top of the DP Challenge site with two icons
5) The left most icon opens the comment editor

Usage Notes:

- To create a new comment click on âadd new commentâ¦â
- To delete a comment, which removes the comment from you comment list (top box) (warning this deletes the comment forever!) click on âdelâ next to the comment you wish to delete
- To edit the text within the comment click on âeditâ next to the comment you wish to edit. When finished editing click on âsaveâ
- To create a comment drag the comments you wish to the lower BLACK box (working comment area) on the comment editor, comments within the black box will be copied to the clip board (note you can also re-arrange the comments within the lower BLACK box, multiple comments will have a period placed after each comment)
- When you have finished building your comment click on the comment box (within the DPC site) for the photograph you wish to comment on and paste (ctrl-V) the comment into the box.
- To remove comments from you working comment area (the lower BLACK box) drag each comment back up and out of the BLACK Box

- WARNING: DPCWrapper.html will only work when you have already logged onto DPC! So please only use the DPCWrapper.html only when you are making comments for photographs, canât stress this enough! Some functionality of the site may not work correctly when it is placed within an iframe (as DPCWrapper.html does)

hmm ... the point of commenting and critquing is to emphasise with YOUR OWN WORDS the THOUGHTS about the photo, of course you can add anything you wish into the comment box but i simply prefer the old fashioned way, i rather comment on 21% of the photo writing down my opinions than comment 100% on them with th help of some tool, no hard feeling please, i DO think you effort is great and there is a lot to know to write something like this

peace,
goran

I agree with the above but still think the original poster has a point, though some might argue otherwise.
I would say this topic is certainly worth discussing a bit more.

Anything to encourage more commenting has got to be a positive thing for the site, besides you would still be able to edit the comments and format you own original comments......or am I just lazy :)

While it may appear as a lazy man's (or woman's) tool I do think it is a good way to up the comment levels while also giving the photographer a little in sight as to what the voter sees or thinks. If you are one of the voters that already say what you like or dislike about an image and what they can do to fix it than BIG BUNCH OF KUDOS TO YOU! Keep up the great work, we can only learn if others are willing to teach.

People are looking for ways to improve what is good or bad about their image, and even canned comments that at least tell them this are better than the ones that just say "nice" or "pleasant".

btw when I went to the site to download it I got a blank screen...probably a work firewall thingy...will check it at home tonight.
