I've seen velvia processing discussed in a number of different threads and I have to admit I have no idea what it is or how to do it. I have the same question about gothic glow. What is its purpose as how is it done? If anybody could explain I would greatly appreciate it.

fred mirandas' web site has a photoshop action ( velvia vision ) you can purchase which helps simulate velvia film, plus increase dynamic range.
i think it's using a contrast masking technique, but being automated and configurable, makes the process much quicker.
EDIT: here's one i ran through that action, but i don't have the un-filtered one anymore...

This site has actions for both Velvia and Gothic Glow. You might want to download them and see what they do to a photo. Might help you to visualize it.
Edit: Gosh, I'm always one step behind MK!

Velvia is a type of film (the old kind you put in cameras) that had/has very vivid and saturated coloring. Since digital doesnt use film the velvia processing is just a form of post processing to replicate the look of the velvia film. You can download photoshop actions that basically fake the look.
Gothic glow is similar in that is it a photoshop action that you download and use. You can get it from here. It seems to just make an image glow. Bear Music uses it a lot.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where someone using a Mac could get these filters? They all seem to be zip files :-( |

Alright, I know I'm starting to sound like a real beginner, but once you have the actions downloaded and then uploaded into photoshop, how do you apply it to an image? |

Zip files work on a mac, don't they? |

No I don't. I used to, when I had a P&S and lots of noise issues, and had to try to punch up images without noising them into oblivion. GG has the side benefit of reducing noise as it amps up saturation, plus of course the glow effect itself.
When I do use GG now, on my own work from the 20D, it's almost always as an overlayer that's faded to like 20% opacity or something.
It's funny, I had a TON of actions I used to use (still have 'em, even) but hardly ever touch 'em anymore. I have an action I made myself for output sharpening at 640 pixels, and I have a couple B/W actions I play with when making conversions, and that's about it.

Here's a really super basic page I just threw together about installing and running actions to get people started. |

UnStuffIt should open the ZIP file, no problem.
