My membership expires in two days. I'm perplexed as to whether or not I
will renew. I love to follow and watch the threads and learn what I can. But even after a year, I still feel like an outsider when I try to participate in the forums. Its as though everyone has their own little group of people who they almost always communicate with. Ther by leaving a question as to the comfort level of jumping into a forum discussion............well thats just me rambling so I guess I will have to decide soon, but feedback and advice is always appreciated.

Tammy, the best way to handle jumping into the forums is just to jump in - even if it feels like you're poking your nose in without 'permission'!
People do tend to have their little groups that they are comfortable with, but I have yet to be told (or even have it hinted) that I am not welcome in a discussion. (I may get told I'm silly or not right, but that's something else entirely).
I guess what makes the forum discussions different than, say, a chat room is that unless you speak up, no one realizes you're hovering on the edges of a conversation. You have to actively engage in a thread, or people just don't realize you're there, so they can't extend an invitation for you to join the 'group'. Does that make sense? It's not that anyone is being 'snobbish' or 'exclusionary', it's just that you're not 'there' if you don't say anything. In a chat room, you at least have a little list of people in the 'room'. Here, you don't.
And I know it takes a while to feel like you're 'welcome' in a thread. but you just have to keep talking. Heck - that's what everybody else does! (Even (or especially) if it's something no one else wants to hear!)
:)

i think the "everyone's in a little group, but me" line of thinking is common, but not 100% accurate. i don't have a group, but i'm more or less active in the forums. i just think the more you participate (in conversations and whatnot), the more "part of the group" you'll feel.
besides, what's 25 bucks? that's like 7 cents per day. |

I had a similar debate with myself before renewing this year, but it only last about a day. Compared to the magazines I buy and the other photography oriented web sites I work with, my DPC membership is the best photo investment I have ever made. I think everybody hits 'challenging' interaction on a thread from time to time, but just keep working it and both your discussions and your photography will continue to improve.

| Renew... Definitely. Whenever I find myself feeling like an outsider (which still happens), I try to comment on other people's shots. You'd be amazed at how much that "reminds" people of your presence here in a very positive way. If you provide thoughtful feedback, they begin to respect your opinion and that carries over into the forum threads. And you don't have to be an expert to give insightful and helpful commentary on other people's shots - it just takes a little time and practice. Keep asking questions and feel free to "bug" me anytime you like! I may not get back to you immediately, but I will respond. :-) |

Heck, when I came here I was an outsider, knew nobody. I was referred by a non-photographer. I just started talking. And kept on talking. And have never stopped talking. And they can't MAKE me stop talking, either :-)

I second exactly what jimmy (sjcarter) has said (he's smart, listen to him).
And $25 is waaaaay less expensive than any magazine - especially since this is interactive; where else can you find a slew of people who just ooze photoknowledge *and* want to share that knowledge!
Ask and comment to your heart's content, and feel free to buzz me with any questions - I'm not very smart but I know someone who stayed in a holiday inn express, I'm more than willing to help.
