Wow, I'm only 21% through, but I've never given so many 10's. The entries are almost all fantastic, I'm really impressed so far.

I, on the other hand, am misunderstood, as usual, LOL.

Man, 8 stores all over town searching for/buying props, 1 night setting up, 2 more late nights shooting... all that for a low 5? Why is it that the shots you take a lot of time on bomb, and then your quick and simple shots do much better? Maybe it's just me. :-(

Trolls must have been out during the night, because I dropped from a 6 all the way to 4.6. Not that I really expected this one to do that well, but I was liking the 6 a lot better...

It's not just you. I really worked hard on this one, and thought I had a contender. It's enough to make you want to sell your camera gear and take up knitting, that's for sure. :(

Hmmm, I imagine I could buy an awful lot of knitting supplies... I wonder if there's a knitting challenge site? :-)

I don't think these early voters realise how hard this challenge was, the DPC stipulation made it very difficult to design a decent movie poster.

I suck. I think I'm finally getting that message through my thick and ignorant skull.

4.8
Woo hoo. Not.

Wow. I was feeling pretty bad about my scores, but looking at the posts maybe I shouldn't? Gah.

No entry for me. Too many obligations this weekend, so I didn't *start* working on my shot until 10:45 last night and I needed another 30 minutes or so to finish it. The good news is that I figured out a new trick that worked out great, so I'll just have to save it for next time. Bwahahahaha!

Last night I was happy - 5.71!
This morning, well, the news is not so good - 5.3.

Would you all please drink some coffee before voting so your eyes are open and focus properly? LOL

It's afternoon here in Holland, so I already had enough coffee, lol.

Really? I found most of them DNMC in my opinion. It has to depict a possible movie to me and something funny with a quirky title doesn't do that but maybe I'm being harsh. I tried to go in very open minded, but I'm finding more than not to be just a description of a photo, NOT a potential movie theme. Maybe I'll go through them all again today but that's how I am seeing it at this point. Sorry, I don't mean to be a hag.

The way you'd work up a photo for use on a movie poster probably isn't the same that you'd do it for a straight photo. The image for a movie poster is going to be stylized, exaggerated, moody. Rather than voting on the straight photography, this is one challenge where the image's communication should be the primary focus.

Additionally, this was a real double-whammy of a challenge - these letters are very difficult to work with, even for a regular title, and to have to make that title suggest a story instead of just a photo... aarrgh.

Only the brave entered this contest, and it looks like we're gonna get beat-up somethin' good.

once again I find myself muttering curses at DPC voters, this time for not understanding what makes a good poster as opposed to a good photo.
05/08/2006 09:49:54 AM · #73
I think this challenge is handicapped by the inability to add text to the poster, as was the case in the DPC Album Cover challenge of a few years ago. This challenge is taking on the nature of a free study with a "DPC" title thrown in (my own shot included).

Aye that. How many movie posters have you seen where the plot is blatantly obvious from a single photo? Just a random sampling from my DVD collection: Mullholland Drive, Office Space, Boondock Saints, The Matrix, Big Fish, Whale Rider... there isn't much you can figure out from any of them. Maybe a mood, maybe a genre, but not much to connect the image to the title or tell you what's actually going on. The ability to build interest and/or intrigue and get the butts in the seats is what makes a movie poster good. But I think that lack of clarity is what's likely hurting all of us. We have the whole story in our heads, and we know why the cat is rolling around in purple donuts, and in the real world it might be the Disney tweener hit of the year. But to the average DPC voter, who has a totally different mindset, it just ends up looking like a mess.
