What are the different methods to convert a color digital photo in to a stunning black/white monotone image? I've searched through the forums, and have not found a satisfactory thread so far, so I though I would start one now. I will add a photo tonight, though I know that I won't be extrememly satisfied with the b/w results.

What I am hoping for, is for people to post before and after photos of b/w conversions, and the steps that they took. Hopefully, we can get some pros in here that may be able to offer pointers to the rest of us, possibly even take our before and show what they can do to it, and how, to make it a stunning photo, rather than just an OK photo.

Please upload your photos and steps and thank you in advance for contributing to this thread.

I've tried a bunch of different filters and add-ons to PS, as well as a number of techniques. But the one that I've had the best luck with is the PS action that implements Greg Gorman's method. After converting using that, I make adjustments and look to make sure that there's some detail in dark areas as well.

It's not DPC basic legal though!

The action can be downloaded here: ATNCentral

Here's an example of one I converted using that

I've been consistently happy with DigiDaan's B&W conversion action. I don't think there's any one "best" way to convert, it all depends on the image and the effect you are after. I like DigiDaan's tool because it provides a very easy way to experiment, at least much easier than Photoshop's Channel Mixer. Here are some examples, first two in fact from the same raw file:
