Hey all,

Harvey has raised a valid question, and as the tournament organizer I would like to share my thoughts on this.

When I designed the MS tournament, one contingency I had to plan for is that someone might give in to temptation and "bend the rules" to advance in the tournament. With this in mind, I added Rule 9 of the tournament rules (quoted in previous posts). The intent was to contact the Site Council and request that they validate the images that advanced in the later rounds. By entering the tournament, each participant agreed that I could request this extra scrutiny on their image (though SC, of course, was under no obligation to provide it).

About a week and a half ago I contacted the Site Council (via the ticket system, I acted strictly as a user and not as a Site Council member in this capacity) to request validation of the week 4 and later round winners, and expressed the concern that cash prizes might bring the additional temptation to bend the rules. The Site Council discussed this (I recused myself from that discussion) and eventually replied that they would be willing to do this.

It should be worth noting that my request only requires about 7 validations over the course of three weeks. A routine validation requires little time and effort to process, so this is not a huge time commitment on the part of the Site Council.

Speaking as a member of the Site Council, I can tell you that most if not all Site Council members believe that these tournaments and leagues have been a positive influence on the site. We have seen a maked increase in constructive participation in all areas of the site, and many of us believe that these tournaments and leagues are a major factor in that. Because of this, I have no problem with the Site Council providing reasonable amounts of logistical support to these even as we continue to classify them as unoffical contests. Personally, I think we get an excellent return on our time investment aiding these events and preventing the type of negativity and fighting that we have sometimes seen on the site in the past.

Thanks,
~Terry

After reading thru this thread it almost sounds like a "waah-waah, I didn't get to play" complaint. It was a volunteer tournament for a good cause - first come, first serve on getting in (there were 64 spots).

Kudo's to DPChallenge, and anyone else that volunteered time, for allowing this charity event to have some space on DPChallenge (along with the many other charity events that are announced and sponsored by the DPChallenge community).

Well said !!!!

Very well said !!!!!

Very well said Terry and speaking from myself I have found a whole new enthusiasm to DPC since these challenges began.

Just read the post that has the Official Rules. I was surprized that some of the contestants will be getting cash prizes. I thought all the money collected was going to go to the charity. My summary:
$640.00 collected as entry fees.
Up to $200.00 paid out in cash prize money to contestants.
What happens to the remaining $440.00? One would assume that it is going to be donated to Multiple Sclerous, but that isn't stated in the Official Rules.

This did not make it into the bracket announcement thread, but it was included in the post announcing the tournament itself and calling for signups. In that post, I stated that the "net proceeds" would be donated to the National MS Society. This means that the full amount of the entry fees, minus actual expenses from running the tournament (prizes and PayPal fees), plus unawared prizes (currently $25 due to a vacancy in the semifinal round), plus interest earned on the entry fees from when I collected the entry fees until I send the donation to the National MS Society, will be donated to the National MS Society. I estimate this amount to be $431 but will announce a final total once the tournament is complete.

Barry, I doubt that's really the case. Harvey has raised some legitimate questions and I for one have no problem spending the time necessary to answer them.

Also, as a reminder to everyone in this thread (Barry, this is not directed at you or at anyone specifically, just a general reminder), please remember that when replying to any post we need to assume good faith on the part of the poster. That is; we should assume that Harvey's question is asked out of genuine concern for the site (as I believe it is), and if there is evidence to the contrary, call it to the attention of the Site Council so appropriate action can be taken.

Thanks,
Terry
