I am extremely interested in the coloured form of Infrared Photography. I believe the Nikon cameras are responsible for this.

Can someone tell me which model is the best for this style of photography please...and also the best filters for it.

I am very new to infrared photography. I bought my first flter last week. It's a Cokin P series. The results have been great so far but I had to take a lot of shots to get the settings right. Thank goodness for digital media. Here is an infrared tutorialI have found thanks to Marbo's top photograph. I have been using the Cokin on my Canon 300D.

I use an old olympus C-2020 which can get hand held results like these.

To keep some colour in infrared photos you must use a hoya r72 or equivalent filter. This filter will still let through a little visible which is normally red and when you swap the red/blue channels you get the blues.
I will be getting a nikon d50 when i`ve saved up just for infrared as they are quite sensitive. However a tripod is needed is exposure times are around 1 second with a r72 filter.

Awesome...that's the info I needed. I currently have the Canon 5D...and I am not willing to have it converted for IR work. I do use my Sony F828 for IR...but it is very limited in its colours. Plus...it is really starting to strain hard nowadays...so I need to look at other avenues.

My filter is a P007.

The Cokin system is great. Very versatile. Check out their website.

//www.cokin.com It will give you samples of what their filters can produce.

Thanks Archer...I have been looking at your link. Actually I have been spending hours studying all of this.

Now a question. A friend said the D50 has slightly lower noise levels than the D70.

So far this is what I am finding.

The D70 takes CF cards.
The D50 takes SD cards (yuck for me).

They are both 6.1mp.

The D70 is dearer (oh DOH!!).

I am specifically after the coloured area of IR. So with this in mind...who can give me some good and bad info about these 2 cameras.

Depending on the ease of use you're looking for you should still be able to use your 5D.

Really...tell me more...and I know that I can get the 5D changed permanently...but I don't want to go down that road.

Just a suggestion, go to the Infrared gallery & click on the photographers names there to check what cameras they use. Hopefully there are D70 & D50 users there that can give you the infomation you are after.

I'm basing it on the 10D which has very poor performance but can be done. For example this photo...

f11 30s

and this one...

f16 60s

and this one...

f22 75s

If you don't want these rather long exposures then a new camera is in order but if you go out on still days you could probably save yourself some money.

Hmm...yes you are right...I just did a test run with the 5D and yes with long exposures I can get IR images...but with the subjects I have in mind I think I will still have to invest in another camera.

Archer...thankyou for your suggestion...I will do that.

Okay....whilst on the same subject of the D70...can someone please tell me if the D70 does multiple exposures as that is another area I want to do in camera....it may just make my decision a little easier.

D70 doesn't do multiple exposures. As for IR, you can find good information on both IR and UV photography with various Nikon cameras here

I will send you some test ir shots at different iso and shutter/apt settings. When the sun comes out to play.
