I wanted to thank everybody for the great comments on my picture "Fresh New Snow". I've worked all winter on editing my IR pictures hoping this spring or summer I would get a ribbon. I guess it paid off! I also emailed marbo about some editing steps. He has giving me a lot of information about IR. His picture Blue Lagoon really inspired me to get into IR work. There is a great Infrared Tutorial in his comments.

I feel a little bad because there is nothing "new" in my picture so I thought I would share with you my editing steps. I'll try to explain this the best I can. Hopefully it will help somebody else be a first time ribbon!

Orginal picture

First step: Levels 33,1.00,255

2nd Layer, New adj layer: Channel Mixer
Here you will want to invert the red and blue in the output channel: red, red 0, blue 100: blue, red 100 blue 0

Your picture should look like this

Next is your Hue/sat:
Layer, new adj layer, hue/sat
Go to edit: blue, you will want to click the eyedropper.

Then click on a part in the picture that is magenta.

And lower your sat to -80. Your trees should start turning black and white.

Repeat the last step until all the magenta is out of the picture!

Next levels again: 25, 1.00, 222

Next is Selective color: layer, new adj layer, sel color:
Work with these colors in your picture. Whatever looks the best
Colors: Black, black +20
Colors: white, black -10
Colors: Neutral, black +5

Next go to Layer, adj layer, channel mixer.
Click Monochrome, keep the edit to red.
red +110 depending again on what looks best in your picture
constant -4

The final few steps can be the fun or the hard part. Depending on how long you want to dodge and burn! I worked 2 or 3 hours dodging and burning my picture. Almost all the limps and shady areas

Thats about it... Rotate, crop, USM as much as you want and run it through Neat Image or any other noise removing program.

Final picture, I edited these pictures above at 640 150k for this thread.

My editing works with my IR pictures. There are better cameras out there that will produce better IR pictures than mine and you don't have to edit as much. The only problem with my G3 is getting the picture really sharp! A problem I'm still working on.

Within the next month I'm hoping to get a tutorial here on DPC that will be better than this thread.

Phillip

Definitely a worthy image. It's amazing the impact USM and NI can have.

Great write up but way too complicated for my simple ediiting skills! - So the ''Fresh new snow'' is in fact not ''fresh new snow'', so what in fact is the ''something new'' in this shot then?

Excellent post processing Phillip and congrats on your 1st ribbon.
I`m sure there will be many more ir ribbon photos this year.
Infrared photography can be very additive, if i can only carry one camera with me when i`m out it`s my old oly c2020.

Excellent tutorial. I'm excited to get out and shoot then give it a try. I'm really enjoying your IR work and I agree with you in regards to Marbo, his work is really inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
