Not for me, being an old Microsoft hating non student type, but someone here could take the $20,000 off their hands ...

Yeah but for 20k?
05/04/2006 12:32:17 PM · #5
i'd do a photoshoot for 20k and abide by all of those terms. Especially if i was a college student. So it is a bit of a gamble.
05/04/2006 12:33:32 PM · #6
I'd do it if I thought I stood a chance. I'm a college student. If you tell just about anyone going through college you'll give them $20000 for one photo, not only would I gladly accept, but I wouldn't even care if they made 2 million off it by selling it to sponsors. It's not like it would ever make me more than $2000.
05/04/2006 12:34:26 PM · #7
Problem is you give them full rights to your photo, even if you come in last place.
05/04/2006 12:35:35 PM · #8
Last place wouldn't be so bad. Then they would have full rights to a sucky photo. But if I came in 2nd place I would probably be upset. Then they would have a photo they're going to make money from, and you get nothing.

I figured that much - but didn't see where you had posted with the quoted comment. Could have just been a case of...

Sorry, everyone...I just posted another thread for this topic after searching for 'Contest' and 'Microsoft' and it not showing up in the results...

Anyway, hopefully some lucky DPC'er will win...even though they lose the right to their photo...

I think it says anyone can...should be in the rules somewhere...

From the site: "provides a unique opportunity for college and university student photographers from around the world to showcase their artistic talent and photographic style"

From what I read you must just be a University student, and be over 18. Nowhere do they mention that you have to live in the US.

Wey hey, excellent!! :)

Look at them bums.....!!!!!

They deliberately set the eligability age to 18 to prevent our Joey Lawrence from competing!!!

Looks like Microsoft just became less evil.

And in other news, satan is reported to have a slight sniffle.

I'm not clear on one thing. Do you just have to be a student or a photography student? And what should I submit?

Open to all students who are 18 (eighteen) years of age or older at the time of entry and actively enrolled at a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree granting college or university

No mention of photography, so any college/uni student.

A single entrant may submit a maximum total of three (3) digital photographs in any of the following categories: i) Nature & Landscape ii) People & Portraits iii) Fine Art.

Hey! That\'s two things!

they don't get the rights unless you win a prize, which is fairly standard:

5. ENTRIES PROPERTY OF SPONSOR.

Submitting an entry does not assign or transfer any ownership or copyrights to Microsoft; those rights remain with the creator of the original work. However as a condition of accepting a prize, you agree to grant Microsoft an irrevocable royalty-free worldwide license to reproduce and display the image, credited with your first and last name, in print and on the web for the purposes of promoting this contest. If you are unable, or unwilling, to grant Microsoft this right, please do not enter this contest.

emphasis theirs.

That's the new, improved language. The previous language (see link in bod's post) granted them full rights for all submissions.
