I've been saving to upgrade from my Nikon CoolPix 5400 for a while now, and I'm curious what other DPCers would buy if you:

-Had ~$800 to spend
-Mainly photographed squirrels, zoo animals, and low-impact wildlife
-Wanted to stick with Compact Flash rather than trashing 4 perfectly good cards
-Hated slow response time (shutter lag, startup lag, etc.) with a fiery passion that consumed your soul

(I already have two excellent tripods, so no need for recommendations in that area)

***EDIT: Yes, DSLR is fine. ***

Could go with a Canon 300D or 350D.

Edit: Or, buy my Nikon Coolpix 8700 :-P

Note requirement to use existing CF cards. D50 only takes SD.

my bad on the CF thing. I was trying to keep her with Nikon. A 350 is well within that price range.
