Has anybody else seen this site? (//www.picture.com/) If so, do you know if it's legit?

As I continue to spend time looking it over, the more it seems to be the equivalent of the "Who's Who of American High School Students." In other words, "Congratulations, your photo has been selected as a finalist. If you'd like, you can own a copy of the book we're printing it in for only $35.00 plus shipping and handling..." But maybe I'm being harsh.

At any rate, I'd be interested to know if any of you have had experience or if your feelings on the site mirror mine.

There are long discussions on 'photo.net' about these companies. It essentially is legitmate, but everyone that sends a picture in wins by getting their picture published in a book that only the entrants and their families would buy. Same thing happens for writers and poets who aren't actually good enough to get published. It's only a con if you think you've really won anything other than someone printing your picture.

So... you mean I *don't* win the ten grand? Dang... no new camera for me.

Actually, hey everyone, GUESS WHAT? You have all won! Yeah, it's true: everyone on this site takes such great pix and because of that you've *all* won a spot in the 'TOP SHOTS OF DPCHALLENGE.COM' book that's being published by Magnetic9999, Inc. Publishing Co.

I just need to collect the $25 processing fee from each person , and we're all set ... :~D

Photolauretes.com sent me an email saying my photo has been selected to be in a book and if I pay this much I will get a plaque, the book and something else (can't remember.)

Then, the next week I get the same email but for a different picture I submitted on their site. This tells me that it is a scam, even though it is a .org

If you do a search you will come up with a lot of threads about this website - dont touch it. It does not matter what you submit it still gets picked!

Did you pay for it to get in that stupid manuscript? I hadn't yet, because I didn't know if it was ligitimate. It is a non profit org though, but the thing is, everyone who submits gets the same email saying they have been chosen as a finalist and is getting published. blah blah blah

My Girlfriend sent in a picture of a butterfly a while back and she got the same thing. They told her that they were going to use her picture in a book of something I forget. well about 2 years after the fact, we found the book at it was in there along with her name and all. So if they say that they are going to use it; they are going to use it. But she never sent in any money or anything like that. I wouldn't send anyone money I know that.

But the book is crap, I've seen a couple. They print every single image that is submitted to them - all layed out in tiny 3"X2" rectangles, hundreds and hundreds of images with seemingly no quality control whatsoever. They then sell those photographers a copy of the book for ~$60 and further solicit for near $1000 to attend a conference where an award will be given, etc. Their only goal is parting you from your cash.
