I curious as to if anyone knows what the wierd vertical lines on the left of my image are from. They are in the original but post-processing made them more noticable. I can just clone it out, of course, but I would like more information about how they get there and how to avoid them in camera if anyone has any ideas.

Is this a one-off or has it happened before?

It has happened before but not all the time and not always in the same place, so I don't think it's a lens error. Perhaps dust or light on the lens? |

I can't tell what time of day this was taken but if it was around noon it could just be a shadow from the interesting clouds. I̢۪ve seen similar shadows from airplane con-trails. |

Roger I would bet you are correct, it looks like shadows of the clouds on the haze overlying the water. Can't be sure, but it is the most probable explanation.

Have you tried reproducing the defect under controlled conditions, like photographing a blank wall or a grey card, or flat white or black surface? Otherwise it could just be shadows showing up in haze. It does look like there are other diagonal lines, less noticeable, that are converging on the same point to the lower left. |

I just ran some experiments taking photos of the blank wall and the camera seems fine. I'm very pleased to know! I guess you are all right that it's just shadows from the clouds. They looked so much like a lens error to me but the more I look at it they do seem to somewhat mimick the striations in the clouds. Now, what do I do, clone it out to make it smoother and more appealing, or is it interesting because it may in fact be an actual cloud shadow that was there? |
