melethia, first it is human, second it is unrepeatably candid, and third it is incredibly all of a piece with the repetitions (balloons, raincoats, umbrellas/canopies, and the rain overall). Admittedly the first two, as opposed to the vaunted clean and simple, don't often appear with ribbons here, maybe because of the challenge themes, but they are I believe prime movers for most people, experts, amateurs, photogs and nonphotogs. But how often do you get them with the thematic resonances in your picture which work like little velcro hooks once you start looking? |

Ah ha!!! The secret is velcro hooks! :-) Seriously, though, appreciate the analyses. |

This shot is simple though. It may be busy with all of the rain, but the concept itself is straightforward. A couple sharing an umbrella in the rain. There is nothing else to really distract the viewer from the primary focus of the image. Great timing getting them in step with each other, the rain works as a texture on the background yet really doesnt impact the two models as far as a distraction. The light and shadow play is very pleasing. This may not be considered eye candy as many ribbon winners tend to be, but it is a brilliant capture, edited perfectly that tells a story that is easily grabbed upon opening the image. And top it all off with the fact that it is not setup. |
And the challenge relevance is absolutely spot-on. In that challenge were a lot of "contrived" images. This image is intensely human and folks related tot hat.

Context is important. When I first looked at that just now one of the thoughts going thru my mind was "the people are walking away, how many commented on no faces I wonder?". :-)
Backsides Challenge, June 2007
However, they are exiting the frame (not much room left in front of them to "move" into). I do like this in B/W much better than the color version posted in the "Photographer's Comments" section. Ok...off to read the comments with the photo now. :) |

I'm interested in photos that have made the top ten but haven't ribboned (I have several of that variety). Here is the latest example. Some pointers as to what works and what doesn't would be great (and BTW, I have a very thick skin, so don't mind truly candid comments).

"I realize it will not score well" Then it does and now you want more? ;)
The simplest thing that might have altered your score a small amount would have been to get rid of that thing that looks like a snake crawling up the window. It's quite a nice shot though.

LOL - point taken. However, since it did score quite well, I was wondering what would have pushed it up that final notch, and have gotten some good comments in that regard, yours included. Thanks. |
