Check out this picture that made the MSNBC Week in Sports Picture collection msnbc
What do you think it would score in a DPC Challenge?

I think 4ish DPC'ers would give alot of OOF comments and DOF comments.

How on earth did that get picked as a top photo? It's a dog.
Maybe seeing the work of dpc'ers is making me a bit jaded. I looked at the whole slideshow at MSNBC's The Week in Sports Pictures. There are 3-4 in that group that I would have deleted the first time I viewed them if they were my shots. Some of the others are very, very good; and not just at capturing the moment which is pretty important in sports photojournalism, but also technically.

Honestly, I think it is a great shot and would have been a very difficult one to get. Sure, the subject is not the most attractive, but you have to hand it to the photographer for being to stop the action like that. I don't think the photo would have been as powerful if the girl was in focus as well as her hands.
Just my 2cents. I would have scored it an 8 or 9. :)

Maybe I missed something. It didn't look like a stop-action shot to me. I took it to be a gymnast hanging motionless from the bar. But still or moving, I think it should have either focused on her face, or had greater depth of field so both hands and face were in focus. I'm looking at the website again but there is nothing in the shot that says motion to me. If I saw her face and torso as being in motion blur rather than simply oof I would consider it a much better shot than I do.

I couldn't have said it better myself.. i love the photo, it's different, arty, and very unique...and definately telling a story... i think he/she did a great job with the photo, it certianly held my attention for longer than a few minutes... my hat goes off to him/her...

I didn;t look at those, but at my last wedding i tossed a pic as bad. then i get an issue of Rangefinder and see the the same shot as a winner in a wedding photo contest. Off color, out of focus with motion blur (bad drag the shutter shot). No accounting for taste I suppose.

The caption indicates the shot was taken during her performance...so it was in motion I'd believe. I agree with JRalston and roadrunner. The photographer's shot may be "different," but hey, it's on MSNBC. Our shots...aren't. ;)

Italy's Monica Bergamelli performs on the uneven bars during the European Artistic Gymnastics championships in Volos, Greece on April 29. Italy won the gold."
Doesn't exactly say the shot was taken while she was performing, does it? I remember once before when we were mislead by the caption writers at MSN(BC) Pix of the Week with the shot showing people looking out the windows of a plane whose cargo hold had a flag-drapped coffin. I later found that shot was originally in Time mag where it had a different caption.
Maybe calling it a dog was over the top. I apologize for being so harsh in my initial criticsm. However I am still not seeing any hint of motion in the shot. Someone said that the subject was not attractive. I can't tell that but it bothers me not. It's sports, not glam or fashion. I think she is wearing eye make-up and perhaps some sequins on her costume, so you would think it was probably at the real competition instead of at a practice session, but it may have been a staged photo shoot. Who knows for sure?
