when i try to download the images from my rebel xt, i see the folder names as '233CANON', '234CANON' etc in my card. Why are images stored in different folder in the compact flash card.
How can i change it to store in just one place ?

IS it advisable to erase all images or 'formal' disk option ?

I think that i u store them in one folder you will not get a continous count on your photos. after a few erases of my card I do a format but both of these should be done with the card IN your camera...not hooked up to your computer. i have heard that it messes up the card to delete/format it via computer

Canon has a default that maxes a folder out at 100 pictures. It was intended as convenience, but not everyone liked it. I personally didn't mind that much.

Newer cameras will have the ability to get around this by creating new folders and having a max of 9999 pictures per folder (or is it 99999?)

Anyhow, aside from this I think the only thing you can do is move the files on your PC. This is really the only place that it makes a difference, as the camera views pictures continuously regardless of folder.

It just makes more work for you...

Thanks Eschelar,
If by default canon allows 100 photos in one folder, then i am fine and as long as its not improper setting in my camera.

But sometimes the folders are empty, that is wired. I dont care much about this.

I 'format' / 'erase all' the memory card when it is inside the camera only. I see format takes 2 seconds while 'erase all' takes around 7-10 seconds, which makes me do format all the time. I wonder if the card life/electronic components dies soon if i make regular formatting once a week !!!

When you erase the card in the camera, it doesn't erase the files the camera used to organize the files. If you erase them while they are being read in a card reader, you can choose to erase the folders as well

Be sure you have the file numbering set on continuous, and you shouldn't have a problem. You'll just always have empty folders if you continue to erase in camera.
