GIS_Boy I have a high opinion of your work. Yes, the image that I commented on from Southern Gentleman is a decent composition, but there are so many technical defects with the photo that makes the photo suffer. To say that the photo is a great photo, is to say that everything about the photo is correct, at least in my opinion. A comment like the you afforded him reaks with the political BS I wrote about earlier; you just can't tell it like it is... You know what makes a good photo "good" just from me looking at your work, why can't you tell him what's wrong with his photo to help him improve rather than just saying that it looks like a great photo to you?

What are you saying? How does this contribute to the conversation?

I was talking about this guy. Last time we had someone here spit the dummy because they didn't like what score they were getting Ken had a bit of a fun with him.

Chit was his name, your not related to him are you?

is this your free study entry?

sorry, wouldn't get a high vote from me too. the photo might be technically ok, but the subject is important too. no affence, but I think it would be a nice shot in a family-album.

Yes.

No offense taken, but I would love to know what makes it a bad photo?

Why sir_bazz, what do you see wrong with the photo? Why is it so difficult for people to articulate what is wrong?
05/01/2006 04:45:52 AM · #108
It's not a bad photo, not at all. But I think the voters wouldn't be searching for this for a ribbon winner. There's got to be some creativity (at least, that's what I think) in a photo to get a high score.

I know, I haven't won a ribbon yet, but I do know creativity and I do know when a photo is appealing to me. Your's isn't, but that doesn't mean it's a bad photo.

Thanks for the comments about my work, I'm flattered that you have a high opinion of it.

Regarding my comment to Scott, "Well mate I think it's a damn fine photo" - I stand by it.

Sure I could tell Scott that he has some sensor dust marks in the clouds but Scott know that, remember this is a Basic Editing challenge so they could not be removed. I could also comment that a central horizon typically is a 'no-no' in photography. But that is just a photographer's guideline and in the case of this photo, I don't think the central horizon detracts from the photo. Like you, I typically don't like borders on photos. But IMO that is a personal taste item so unless it's bright pink or lime green, I don't mind either way. In this case, the white border gives a classic feel and works well with the B&W image.

Why do I think it's a "Damn fine photo"? I think the road acts as a strong leading line for the image drawing the view's eyes straight to the main subject - the rays of light beaming from the clouds. These are excellent and if this hadn't been a basic challenge I'm sure they would have been D&B to add even more depth. I also love the whole feel of the photo, it gives me a small fuzzy feeling when I read the title which works really well with the subject matter in the photo.

As you have pointed out, there is the small issue of some artefact in parts of the clouds and that is probably why I didn't comment that this was a ‘Damn Excellent’ image. Do I think this image is worth a 4? Absolutely not, anything below a 5 is a fail in my books and this image is way above a failure grade IMO.

It's not bad thats why it's a 5 and not a 3 or 4.

It's just not creative or unique enough to stand out from the crowd.

Your pic is technically sound, (maybe a tad oversharpened for my taste), but the way you presented the subjects could've been improved. Personally I don't like flat lighting. Had I chosen to shoot this couple outdoors I would've waited for softer evening light and done away with the fill flash. I find the tiny catchlights distracting more than anything else and if I was being extremely critical I'd also add that the bokeh from the lens you used is quite garish. (Was it the 50mm f1.8?)

The gentlemans fingers around the womans waist also look odd coming out from the side of the frame and his head and body seem to be tilted slightly away from his companion giving the impression that he isn't too thrilled about sharing his personal space at this particular time.

Of course I'd rarely, if ever, study an image to this level during voting because there's just not enough time to do this but this leads to another point about DPC and voters. To garner higher votes you need to try and make instant impact with the viewer.....if you don't then it's a lot of votes of 5 and on to the next image.

I sincerely hope you take this feedback in the positive way it was meant and furthermore I hope you hang around a bit longer to see if you have a strong submission in you. Technicals are important but creativity is what will be rewarded by the voters.

cheers,
bazz.

My 2 cents worth.... I would agree with others that your shot seems technically competent. Compositionally, I don't think the fellow looks particularly comfortable and appears to be leaning away from the lady and peering around her. Not a big thing, but an area where an improvement could have been made. IMO however the main thing keeping your score down a little is that it holds little appeal for voters because they don't know the subjects. I'm sure your subjects would be happy to have this pic on display in their living room, but in shooting for this challenge you knew you were going to have to please a bunch of folks to whom your subjects are just strangers in a pic. For people to be 'grabbed' by a portrait such as this, I think it needs to offer something more.

I would like for it to be disqualified. I asked that it be removed, and I guess that's not going to happen so this is my only route. Thank you.

Your ticket(s) have been addressed. Check your mail.

Thank you. I should say that no sharpening was used in this image.

Well there may a problem with your resizing technique because there we're visable signs of the jaggies on the edges of the womans shirt, (along the button line), and the gentlemans hairline also showed problems where it contrasts with the background. Over compressed maybe ?

bazz.

I think I called it in an earlier post; my picture was the first submission, which assures me of a brown ribbon

Cool! Now what's the chance of me holding on to this avg? My past few entries have started well and then bombed big time mid voting.
