LOL. Funny that you commented, "why the negative space." Answer: The damn challenge. Of course I also concluded that these images weren't challenge worthy. In fact my attempts at negative space are what ruined them since I adjusted the levels to make the black background actually show up black and lost detatil elsewhere. Thanks for taking the time to comment on them all. Much appreciated. |

No problem.
Here's my 2c on the challenge - negative space should be something that helps understand the image. A sole person among a vast desert. A bird flying in the blue sky. The biker pic that was in the other thread.
I guess the negative space should have REASON. To quote Setzler in the best lesson I've ever learned here: "WHY?" That's the reason I asked - I figured it was an experiment in neg space, and I'll just offer that maybe I asked because it didn't 'fit.' :)
(And maybe that's why you deemed it not challenge worthy, but maybe not)

Basically that's why I thought they weren't challenge worthy. I mean, it IS negative space, as the space IS negative, but it isn't negative space that really adds anything to the image. I disagree that the successful use of negative space has to show a sense of displacement or juxtaposition of sizes. Often negative space is interesting as just that, space, particularly if it has a nice shape to it. |
