I've ready too many reviews and my head is about to explode. I'm looking for a reasonably small camera that I can take with me where the DSLR is too big. I have a Canon G3, but I'm looking for something better (faster). I've missed too many shots with the G3 because it's too slow to focus and take the picture. I.e. I went whale watching, and the only pic that came out in focus was when the whale was already in the water... :(

Here's what I want:
- A viewfinder, for sunny days
- Fast shutter (no/little lag)
- Portable (smaller and lighter than DSLR)
- Uses rechargeable lithium battery (no AA's, so most Fuji/Olympus/Sony cameras are out)
- 6+ MP
- Great image quality
- Little noise

It seems all small cameras have lots of noise at ISO over 100. The Panasonic models suffer quite abit in this regard.

The Canon S80 has some distorion in the wide angle... I wonder if it's as bad as some reviews mentioned... anyone has one?

I welcome suggestions.

There is a Casio that is suppose to have the least amount of shutter lag, and some option that puts everything past x ft in focus (like a hyperfocal) and as long as you are past that distance, and the option is set, you are suppose to have lightning fast shutter speed.

However, I'd personally recommend teh Canon Powershot A series. Might not be as fast shutter speed wise, and the noise quality is decent as well (My A70 was decent, so I imagine subsequent models are as well)

Fuji F11 (or the F10)
Very fast shutter (0.01 seconds)
Fast startup (1 second)
Fast focus (never hunts)
Clean, very low noise sensor (can go up to ISO 1600)
ultra-compact (smaller than your G3 definately)
uses rechargable lithium battery (as you wanted)

Hope this is what you wanted.

The F11 looks very impressive. I wish I could get it here in the U.S., in lieu of the F10. I'll have to do some more research into the xD memory type, as I've never heard of it before.

Here is a link to the Finepix F10 which is very similar to the F11 (all those traits mentioned above are there) which is available in the US market, or if you can wait a little while more, the F30 will be out soon worldwide.

XD cards are developed by Olympus and Fuji for their range of digital compacts - fast write speeds, low power consumption. more expensive than CF tho, but which card isn't? lol

I bought the F10 along with two cards for 512 MB. I read of problems with the bigger 1 GB models, due to sizing and a compression scheme inside the card. Not sure if it's true, but I don't want to risk it. I'm going to be away for 3 months, and the camera needs to work well.

It should be here today!! :)

Thanks crayon for your suggestion!

For a truly versatile Point-and-Shoot experience, check out this Pentax underwater-capable camera. It has some pretty good customer reviews, including my favorite lines:

"If I had made the choice of another camera it would have not
survived the washing machine in Alaska. Thank-you Pentax."
