Hi folks, like the title says, I'm just wondering if there are any known issues and pitfalls with 3rd party rechargeable batteries. I just ordered a 30D and am considering getting "generic" brand rechargeable batteries because I've heard they are better than the OEM Canon ones (longer shooting life and less expensive). They are also rated at 1800mAh vs. the 1390mAh of the Canon BP-511A . Any feedback (good and bad) from people who use 3rd party batteries would be appreciated :)

They can be just as good or better... Or they can crap out like mine did after less than a year.

I got one for my 300D and haven't had any issues. It works just as well, and has more mAh, so actually lasts a bit longer. For 1/3 the price, I sure won't be buying Canon brand batteries in the future!

I don't know about the supercheapies, but I bought a couple of the Power2000 clones for my XT from BatteryBarn and they've been as good as the XT battery (as well as BatteryBarn being a good place to buy, from past experiences).

Yeah, they are just as good (better for the price and longer charge cycles).

brand x batteries are just as good even better sometimes and last so much longer. I just brought some ASSIA batteries from ebay they are 1200 MAH batteries. They last such a long time, much better than my canon batteries did.

Great deal on ebay also 2 of them I got for 20 bucks.

Thanks for input guys! I think I'll go ahead and get the SterlingTek version of the battery. For the price, I'm willing to take the risk on getting a bummed version. My biggest concern was whether or not 3rd party batteries are just as "safe" as OEM for the camera. But it sounds like no one's had any bad experiences in that respect.

I probably got the same batteries on Ebay. They last forever!

I have some sterlingtek batteries. I bought two months ago and still haven't had to change/charge the battery. These things are ridiculous.

I've always had 3rd party batteries as backups on my Nikon and they work just fine. Depending on the type of battery, you can get them dirt cheap on eBay. I think I paid a whole $1 for my current backup, so for that kind of price I think it would be worth trying.

I have read sevearl stories of non OEM batteries catching fire. If it happens, you have no warranty coverage. Maybe I just worry too much. I'd really think about it with that Canon. You'll need that warranty judging by all the problems listed on here.
