Let me start by saying I'm new here. I am enjoying looking at all the contests and entries.
I've entered 4 challenges so far. I went to enter my 5th challenge, Complimentary Colors. When I tried to submit my entry I was told I had an entry in Negative Image, if I wanted to enter Complimentary Colors I need to unsubmit from Negative Image.
I've read through the challenge rules and the FAQ and I can't find anything about entering 2 different open challenges at the same time.
This is frustrating since I've spent some time and effort on both challenges. I was not made aware of this policy until I tried to enter the 2nd challenge.
Is there a reason for these challenges being mutually exclusive? I don't get it.
Thanks and I look forward to entering many more challenges.

The two exclusive challenges were implemented because when there was only one, the submissions on some of them were getting up to 600+ entries. There were a number of people who felt that it was getting to be to difficult to vote on them, and that people were feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of entries.
The exclusive open challenges were implemented to deal with the sheer volume of entries to some of the open challenges

We do realize it can be a surprise. We're looking at ways to clarify it.
The reason they are mutually exclusive is to attempt to limit the number of entries in each challenge, and also to give users a choice of what to shoot for each week.

Maybe call them "Mutually exclusive open challenges" ?? ;) Or when they're listed, show them as "Open Challenge A" OR "Open Challenge B". Could add a note in the FAQs, too.
(Aren't I helpful?) Yes you can tell me to shut up and go play in my room now.... |

I think it would fit right in the FAQ under the Why can't I sumbit to this topic heading |

That caught me by surprise several weeks ago too.
Perhaps just adding some wording on the challenge page, like:
"Exclusive Open Challenge: xxx and yyy
Pick only one of these two... "
Of course - each newbie (like me) discovers this only once, grumbles and probably moves on, recalling how exciting it is to have your pictures be seen and see other pictures - learning from one another along the way.
Scarbrd - I was there too.
