I have been a member for a while, and I was just wondering why this photo got its butt kicked so bad. I only had one comment, so I am still oblivious to what went wrong. I met the challenge, and I thought the details came out o.k., I can only speculate that it was the subject at hand with its less appealing touch overall.
...Anyway, I would also like to open this thread to the folks who had decent out takes, but didn't enter for whatever reason. As well as the folks who didn't recieve much feedback about their entry and are looking for quick critique.
Thanks guys and GL in all ventures.

The DOF is weak, the lighting is lackluster, the composition is unremarkable, and the subject is gruesome (as you've already guessed); end result, a bottom finish. You have to be REALLY good to get a high score with a skull, especially a grungy one, and this is, to be frank, a pretty average picture if we disregard the subject.
Compare my entries in "textures III" and "textures IV":
Notice that the second outscored the first by a significant margin, 6.4 to 5.8. Yet, as far as I'm concerned, the first is a much better picture in its own right and a better example of texture as well. The feedback I received on the mushroom shot told me that it doesn't matter much how WELL you photograph an unappealing subject; you still won't get an especially high score.
Obviously, incidentally, the voters don't agree with me that the mushroom's better than the boat, so no need to enter a debate about that :-)

Thanks bear, I knew you'd come through for me. I will work on it, sincerely.
I must admit though, I too along with the voters, like the second. The colors are just beautiful in the second, and so very well contrasted. And like you said in one of the other forums, you gotta shout to be heard. I think in the second, its a shout, to as where the first is pretty settle, and forgettable. |

My (pretty pathetic) entry:
My outtake:
I actually had the outtake entered, but I was so convinced it would do badly that I tried to set something else up at the last minute with disasterous results. Guess I shouldn't have entered.
The irritating part of the whole thing is that I only had 2 comments and they were both positive.
As far as your photo is concerned:
From my score you will see that I'm not in a great position to comment, but I think technical issues played a part. The lighting looks a bit harsh, and I don't think the texture is captured as well as it could be. I also don't feel scores are always a true reflection of the quality of a photo. One of my top selling stock photos did quite poorly here.

I dont see it in your entry, I get a confused feeling to the point of distraction. Like what is it? I can't feel the texture, though I can see the effort. I am not an expert on the details, so I normally critique with my personal feelings, and I just come out of it thinking sort of not here not there, a valiant effort but not enough to stand up to the challengers.
After having said that though...I like the colors, and it seems to me that a couple of hairline technicals held this photo back from what it actually could of scored. |
