I know this has been discussed before but I think onece more shoudn't hurt. I belive that people that rate a photograph either as a one or a ten should be required to leave a comment. If someone feels strongly enough to rate something at the extremes of the grade scale they should feel that they have to leave a comment.

I understand your feeling completely Corey.
I have a feeling though that many folks like the anonymity of their votes and are not willing to be scrutinized for their extreme votes.
I make it a practice to comment to my top ten choices.

Albeit that I would greatly appreciate being in your top ten, in the interim perhaps you could outline the (many) deficiencies I have. |

that wouldn't work, though. it'd just spark a lot of '.' or 'good' or 'bad' comments which are really meaningless. there's no way to force someone to leave a meaningful comment.

I personally think that only on a vote of 1 that a voter should be required to leave a comment of more than a wordâ€Â¦ more like about 30+ but there are ways around that. In my opinion I don’t think too many photos deserve a 1. But that’s just me.
About the top 10 getting comments, I once again don̢۪t believe in that either. Usually my top ten are at least a lot of other peoples top few and those usually get quite a few of comments ( I don̢۪t mean to take away from those people) but I think others deserve the comments also, I mean the middle of the road and below.
When I decide to spend time to comment I don̢۪t pick one here and there. I actually prefer to start and vote on the next few (may it be 10 or 20 or whatever) but I just comment on a batch of photos that come up randomly. That way I̢۪m able to comment on a variety of photos that I rate accordingly.
Just my two cents!

I hear you Moose... I have never given a 1 to anyone yet...I got this scoring scheme from someone in here that I really like and I use it consistently... It may not be perfect but at least it helps a person like myself who is relatively new on here.
I did have a fairly good average up until the last few challenges which were.... mmmmmmmmm a tad hard to score.

I guess if you hate a photo so much that you score it badly, a comment could be justified. However I personally don't like the idea of forcing people to give comments, whether its to justify a vote or if there was a comment quoter.
When I give out a ten its because I love the photo so much, I kind of think my score alone tells the story. Sometimes there is just nothing you can possibly say about a photo. Yes you can write 'great photo' but that really has no meaning. Its actually hard to critique a photo that is of such a high quality because the reason you are giving it a ten, is because you think its floorless.
I do think giving out ones is a bit differnet.
But generally you will get a few of the high commentors telling you why they love it and if the photo has negitive aspects, people will tell you as well. It probably evens out anyway.
I guess to me something seems wrong with forcing people into comments. I personally do not want comments from people unless they actually want to take the time to write something, because they are more likely to write something helpful then.

Well I leave comments for my top votes 7 and up. I don't give out ones because I don't believe that any photo is that bad.... Well maybe my one for Passing Time! Bad Light, overexposed....the shot could not have been much worse! =) |

I agree with several people here, that in order to vote an image '1' or '10', a comment should be required. I try to leave constructive comments describing what I see, not Just "the lighting is bad" kind of thing. Why is it bad? I hate vague comments, without details. Why waste the time. I would also welcome feedback on my comments. If I have completely missed the boat on talking about an image, I would welcome the artist to discuss it, and have an opportunity to explain why he/she used that lighting, or that format, or what ever the case may be. I do leave scores of '1' and those are usually on photos that don't follow the description of the challenge AND are poorly photographed. It doesn't happen often, but I'm not afraid to do it. I limit myself to only giving out one '10' per challenge, and maybe that is a bad thing, but it's what I do. That is the image I expect to win the challenge. Let me also add, I've never picked the winner, so I guess I can be wrong too. |
