Sorry Madman to compete with your skate thread, but I been meaning to post this since like Sunday but kept putting it off.

Anyways, heres a few photos from the past week or so. Lemme know what you think and more importantly, how I can improve.

Really nice. I really like the look of the stairsets with the square rails.

My favorites would be #4, #1 and #2, in order.
#4 because the colors are great, and the fisheye distortion of the buildings in the background looks awesome. Nice composition/timing too, to get him right between the two buildings. Any other shots from that spot? It seems to me that even though the composition in that one is good, a shot with the rider on the rail and closer to the center of the frame would be nice, and it wouldn't distort the rider because he's near an edge. But I might be wrong, the composition might look too cramped and static that way.

I like #1 also, mainly because of the symmetry of the stairs and the building, contrasted by the bright blue diagonal line of the rail, and the rider on it. Good textures on the sides of the steps too.

#2 is cool because the first thing you see are the distorted steps in the foreground, then you notice the filmer and the rider. Great capture of the action, but if I were to nitpick I'd say the rider might be a little far away, and something about the colors seems a little off. Definitely a good photo though.

Edit: The MadMan snuck in there before me. Oh well, hooray for redundancy!

4586 is definitely my favourite. I love the wide-angle distortion of it and the low angle. I think that getting down low is one of the best things one can do for skateboard photography, adds so much more power to the images.

I also like 4747 simply because of the amazing frozen-capture as well as the excellent lighting on the skater himself (good fill light on the front and a nice backlight [source unknown] seperating him even more from the black background).

Apart from that, 4443 and 4563 seen to be, in my opinion, 'documentary' shots. They freeze the scene well and the talent behind the trick is obvious but the subject is centered and the shooting angle is fairly mundane so they just don't have the same punch as the other shots. I hate to be a slave to the rule of thirds but this is a sport packed with action, movement, and dynamic energy, and it's tough to capture that in an image with a centered subject. I'd walk in an arc about 5 metres to the left, lay down on the ground, and shoot with the guy in the left-third (or possibly even right-third, exiting the frame).

Anyway, my opinions. Take 'em or leave 'em.

Thanks for the lengthy comments...much appreciated.

As far as hitting that red rail, its totally unhittable because of the kink at the end and the knobs or "skatestoppers" throughout it. Its one of the most popular spots in Miami so they try to make it as "unhittable" as possible. As in matter of fact, we got kicked out of there in like half an hour, which isnt bad for that spot at all.

Thanks that backlight was a sunpak 622 super flash on 1/4 power fired by a pocket wizard behind the white ledge.

2 is decent, get that filmer outta there and get more light on the skater, hes like 1/2 to a stop under. the b/g is a decent exposure.

4 is tight, but that guys steeze is a little funky. is he doin an indy grab over a rail? almost looks like a stiffy. tell that dude if you're gonna be gettin all up in there for some photos he should grab melon or somethin that looks good.

6 is good, nice rimlight, but the crookedness of the lines kinda bothers me...i dunno how you got up to where you were shootin from but straightening those lines out woulda helped.

the other ones are kinda stock i guess.

btw....sbp died. the new stuffs at //www.agroism.com/html

its new and small, dont tell a lot of people lest we get a lot of people who dont know what theyre doin...but you should post shots there get some critical feedback.

i wish i had skaters to shoot these days....you're makin me jealous.
