Someone said that it wasnt a candid just because of the name, isnt that being a little rough?

LOL - At least my score was climbing - From very bad to bad. As I looked at my entry I realised that it looks very much like a "MY KIDS" photo - which it is not.
I had one comment - somebody saying that the shot would've looked better in natural light. OK - next time when doing a candid entry, I will ask the subjects to come to my studio so that I can have better lighting when doing a candid entry. Very good idea. Thought the idea of a candid shot was to catch somebody as they are doing something - UNPOSED!!!! Which is exactly what my shot is.

Ag well - back to the drawing boards.

I started out this morning at 5.6, a personal best. Now I'm down to 5.2, but at least I have 3 comments already.

Would be nice to get some comments on mine, is there anyway to look at a persons challenge entry from their profile whilst voting is still in progress?

If so feel free to comment on mine, thanks alot.
Down to 4.5789 after 38 votes now. :(

NO! You should only comment on the photo from the voting page. This whole challenge is about not knowing who enetered what. We wouldn't want to pick favorites because we know who they are, now would we???
A totally unbiased voting system. It is early in the game yet. A LOT of entries and plenty of time for voting....

OK even I thought my entry was only so-so, and that is wholly reflected in the score :)
But I am surprised, this one is not one of our better challenges, quality wise. Candid is tough!
I am surprised at the number of portraits and pet photos, IMHO I didn't think that would be considered Candid...this one will be tuff to score. Maybe that explains the lower votes ( aside , from Mr RIkki!! congrats!)

Kerm-Don't know if that's legal or not but it's certainly considered bad form.

I'm honestly have to say that I'm dissapointed all around...with my score....the entries...and events in the Middle East...

There are some really good entries but I'm surprised as well to see so many pet and non-candid shots. My picture is candid but technically not the best. It was a simple point and click shot and the moment was gone before I could shoot again. Based on my comments I got an emotional response from at least two of three people. Based on how the recent scores are coming in(6, 3, 5), it seems like some are seeing what I saw and others either don't see it, or can't get past the imperfections.

I have a feeling that some of these pets which are technically superior to mine will score higher. I took an awesome shot of a seagull over the weekend and was halfway tempted to enter it...

I have to say this has been a painful one for me to vote on so far, and I suspect this will be one of the lowest scoring challenges in terms of my own voting.

On the candid challenges, I give a good bit of weight to whether the photographer made any attempt to leave their comfort zone to get a shot, or whether they just snapped something and considered it to be a candid.

I'd say that a good 75% of the shots are simply NOT candid, or little effort went into them. I don't want to be any more specific than that during voting, but I really feel like most of these shots are skirting the challenge.

Sorry to be mopey and whiny... must be the weather :)

Did anyone else find it difficult to take pictures of strangers? i found myself rushed and i only got one shot out of each idea. i have many "could have been great if only i had..." shots
maybe i should work on this do it doesnt feel like i just commited a crime and am fleeing the scene

I agree on both accounts - the fact that a lot of them aren't candid and the weather. It's horrible right now in these parts of te country ;(

I just have on thing to say about the scoring on Candid:

OUT DAMN TROLLS!! OUT I SAY!! GO BACK TO LIVE UNDER YOUR BRIDGE AND STAY THERE!

Mine's not perfect but DANG!

I definitely think that this challenge will be one of the lowest scoring that we have seen in a long time. Looks to me that the majority of the pics are posed portraits and not candid at all. With all the being said I myself am guilty of taking a bad picture as evident by score which looks to be my lowest scoring ever!!!

:(

I'm not the greatest by any means...YET, mind you, but I question a lot of these entries! I am not impressed with over half of them. I took 176 shots to find the right one...and got it. I asked permission from that person,(whom I do not know) to use it in this contest, they said OK. Since then, they have seen it, bought 2 16x20's and a packet of the other shots. Here, I'm just sitting at 5.3590. hmmmmmmm

I think that might have been me who commented, in which case the subject was looking directly at the camera, which doesn't exactly scream 'unposed' to me. Either way, it's just a suggestion/comment, no need to get worked up about it.

Iagree with Alan's points about the images in the challenge - so far, at any rate. It's been a while since I had time for a concerted voting session and I was looking forward to this one.

However, taking candid shots is damn difficult; I still struggle with the reluctance, even though I've been doing it for about a year now. The ability to overcome the nervousness and tension, and still to think calmly and quickly about composition, allied with an ability that can only be learned to expect certain movements and situations requires immense speed of thought, and complete and instinctive control of your camera. But then, this is the challenge - and if it were easy, what would be challenging about it?

I'm immenseley impressed that so many people entered images for this one - we could all have simply found something chrome of course. Even the wildlife shots and other DNMC candidates - whihc really will only be victims of Joe Voter's opinion anout what makes a 'candid'.

given the fact that good candids are extremely difficult to due, why not adjust your voting scale just a pinch ... rather than handing out a bunch of 3's?

Street shooting (while very sligtly different from just candids) is an imperfect science. Things like motion blur, out of focus areas, unavoidable obstacles, etc are a little more accepted as "the norm" in these types of shots.

A quick flipping thru of street photography galleries (google search) will perhaps help you to enjoy the voting a bit more.

That being said, I'm about 25% done with voting and I think people have done pretty well. Yes, there's a bunch of non-candids there, but there's also some excellent work :)

Portraits can be candids.

I first took one picture of my subject which must have heard the shutter since he turned and looked in my direction and i took another picture. In my books thats a candid but i think ill get hammerd for it.
