I must be crazy. I am going to Africa to South Sudan with one of the "Lost Boys" Isaac Majak back to the village where he was born.
This is the house we will be staying in:
I'm sure I will have many questions but for now ....
Does anyone know of a sale on CF Cards? |

get one of those devices that you stick a CD in...and it downloads your card right onto the CD.

We have a school in Kenya and the house they built for me looks like this. I go to kenya about once a year. In the early days we had no power and I had limited CF cards because they were so expensive, so every shot had to be considered. I took film cameras as well.
Nowadays we have generators as well as Solar power and I take my own powerboards, laptop and extra batteries and I download my shots every night.
You have to be careful about dust. Especially with a DSLR. You also have to be discreet about your gear as many poor people with bad intentions will take it from you in a flash.
In Nairobi, my kenyan hosts overheard some street kids say, 'there's a good farm for us to harvest' when they saw me with my Lowepro backpack! We made our way out of there in a hurry.
People love to have their picture taken, especially if they can see it straight away. They will also ask you for your address, but don't give it to them as they might scam you to try and get you to get them across to your country. They won't stop hassling you!
Generally, keep your gear close to you and always in your sight.
The suggestion earlier about a CD device for bck up is good, but if you can get a cheap laptop, I think it's better because others can view your photos and they get a real kick out of that.
There are usually places where you will be able to recharge, even if you have to give them something for it.
If you visit my portfolio you'll see some of my Kenyan shots...
Enjoy the trip and feel free to ask questions...

I believe most of them uses AA batteries. If you can find a solar recharger for AA batteries you are set.

Thank you! My second question was going to be about solar chargers.
My third question is about model releases. Suppose I have a picture like this that Isaac Majak took?
Do we need a model release to sell this? Or is it photojournalism? Does a model release in Dinka also need to be signed in English? Would a signature from the patriarch of the family suffice? |

Model releases are required if the image is to be used for commercial purposes but not if it is to be used for editorial. Editorial includes newspapers and magazines on all manner of subjects.
I have, over the last year, slowly started to load/ sell images with stock libraries and asked Alamy about the question of model releases. Their response is that any images submitted to them for sale under their Royalty Free scheme must have model releases where appropriate but that images submitted to them for sale under license do not require one - they have enough clients who do not require model releases to still be able to successfully market the images.
Of course, if you can easily obtain a model release, so much the better.
I took a stack of simplified ones with me to India but never did come across an opportunity to use them - just didn't fit with my shooting style.

Thank you Kavey - I remember the thread where you perfected the simple model release - DO you remember where that thread is? |

No idea - I don't have watched threads any more - but here is the tweaked version I ended up with. Note that some stock agencies accept only their own versions of the form (which are much longer than mine) but I felt that if I were to use it at all I'd never succeed if I presented anyone with a great long contract!

hey kavey
that is a great and concise version. I know that I have been told too, that if the person does not really understand what they are signing it is not really valid. So I agree short and clear especially in places with culture and language differences, I think yours is much better
Can I make use of it as well?
