Wolf Camera has two "photo studios in a box" on sale right now. Do you know if these are any good? Are they too small to use for most things? Good deal, bad deal? Which setup is the best? On the pic on the left, would that stand hold a 20D? Is there a better setup that you know about for $200 or less?

Glenda,

This response probably doesn't answer your questions but I feel compelled to stick my nose in here.

The Smith Victor setup on the right side could EASILY be made DIY with about an hour of your time, for under $40.00.

1. Get two 8-10" aluminum reflector clamp lights from Home Depot / Lowes / Hardware Store ~$10.00
2. Buy 1 24"x24" piece of 1/2" plywood @ same store and have them cut two (or 4) 12x12's out of it. ~$5.00
3. But 1 3/4x3/4 (or closest size) and cut two pieces about 18" (or what every you choose) - ~$2.00
4. Follow these steps for a simple light tent - Super Simple Light Tent //www.instructables.com/ex/i/BEFDA1F002CB102985CB001143E7E506/?ALLSTEPS - ~$10.00
5. Get two 26 watt compact flash bulbs from same store - ~$10.00
6. Secure the posts to the bases with screws and elmers glue - $1.50.

You may find some ideas to secure the clamp lamps to the top of the posts - or you can just clamp them to any position on the post and vary them for each shot.

If you plan the project out - you can probably do everything in under an hour.

Glenda, I wouldn't buy those.
I have a home made light tent like this one.
Cheap , flexible (I have different lengths pipes to make small or large tents), and collapsible.

The camera stand in that ad looks useless. I use a small beanbag (or wheat, in my case) because at times I want the camera only just above the table. Any taller, and the beanbag goes onto a box or I just use my tripod.

Edited to add: For the lightbulbs, make sure to buy some full spectrum (daylight) bulbs - their light is sooooooo much better for photography!

My setup is rather primitive, but cheap, and you don't see it in the photos afterwards. Here is an example:

Cool! Thanks! One thing I had wondered about was the size of the boxes b/c it seems like there would be a lot of times when I'd want them to be a little bigger. If I make my own, I can make them a little larger.
