Tonight I was on a photo shoot (engagement pictures) and I'm about 15 minutes into it, and decide to change lenses, and the camera just up and died! It turns on, but the LCD won't turn on. I can take a picture, but it, obviously, won't display. None of the buttons on the top of the camera work. None of the buttons down the left side work. No error codes (no infamous Error 99). I can rotate the program selector on the left, but I can't change white balance, ISO speed, any of that stuff on the right.

I tried taking the flash off, the lens off, the memory card out, the battery out (even removed the battery grip), put it all back together and it still doesn't work. I even replaced the battery grip with the single battery compartment. Still no joy.

So I tried taking pictures. It still seemed as if it was working. I even verified that it was saving the pictures by plopping the card into my Epson P-2000.

So I debated... do I keep taking pictues? It would almost be like shooting film! No review capability. And I would be stuck with the ISO that I started with. Sure sounds like film. Anyway, the couple was kind enough to agree to finish up the shoot next week. I'm just glad it wasn't a wedding. (though I usually have my Digital Rebel with me as a backup)

I had planned to upgrade later this year, but the fact that I have a wedding tomorrow morning just bumped the timing up a bit! I wondered, do I rent another 20D tomorrow, or do I go ahead with the 5D purchase now? I hate paying twice for something, so I decided to buy it now.

The extended warranty on the 20D ought to cover fixing it. So I'll still keep it as my backup camera.

But now the Digital Rebel (300D) is up for sale. I haven't even thought about money yet, so I'll have to research things a bit before posting an asking price, but let me know if anyone is interested.

Yeah, definitely a nitemare! Considering the issues seem to be global but not 100% work stoppage take it to a service center and see what they say. I wouldn't be surprise if a connector is loose or something VERY simple like that.

You did the only thing anyone could do - replaced.

I'm sort of speechless about what we should expect from manufacturers here - considering the top dollar costs. I just don't know.

I worked with it a bunch at home and even had the dealer fiddle with it, but we could find no "obvious" source of the problem. Luckily, I renewed the extended warranty only a few weeks prior (the camera is just over a year old now). So it's on it's way back to the shop right now. Hopefully it won't be long. I *do* like the fast shutter speed of the 20D. But wow, I've taken nearly 800 pictures with the 5D since Friday night and I gotta say, for weddings and such, this is a sweet camera! :-)

Glad to hear that you are able to pull a win out of this situation. I'm sure the 5D will produce great results as I know the 20D will too.

Happy cost recovery with the new cameras! You've got some stunning work and I know it won't be long.
