I thought of starting this thread after the results on my garden challenge.
I noted that out of the 17 odd comemnts I got in the challenge for my entry "Found This Bird Baby in the Garden" more than half are just about the subject being cute. Others who gave sugessions thought that the picture was a little dark towards the left side. Made me wonder if everyone, (atleast who gave the comments and possibly many others) liked the picture why did it not do better....

It would be great if people put comments about the picture that technically help the photographer in improving his/her skills.

Special thanks to DavidLevin, ddsoul, KarenB, Konador, and cpanaioti for their valued comments on my picture. Also for all those who wanted to know if the bird made it... it's fine and chirping in it's nest, probably will fly away in a few days.

For those who mentioned that the bird is a little dark on the head, please note that it's the natural color of the bird.

Speaking of comments I am somewhat in the same boat for the garden challenge. I submitted the wrong photo for a start, an experimental extreme crop to see if there was a difference on my A70 between fine and superfine mode.

Anyway I had one person ask which end is the head?
I certainly got a laugh out of it but not a bit of help.

I hope you have better luck telling your arse from your head.

My two cents worth, I didn't complete all of the pictures in the garden challenge and missed both of these shots. When I first read this thread I felt sorry for both of you and looked at your results. My conclusion is that if you sort through the comments the great majority of the faults with both pictures are pointed out. And those little faults did in fact cause them to score lower than if the pictures didn't have them. Overall you scored, IMO, pretty well. Both pictures are composed very well and of interesting subjects, so the technical end of things is all that needed improvement. Some people do have a hard time writing, or don't feel qualified to offer suggestions, and just say "it's cute". With the large number of pics in the "Garden Challenge" you both received a lot of comments.

I especially liked all of the information that BLEE had with his entry. I find this information, which a lot of people do not enter, to be very helpful when I revisit pictures. :<)

Keep shooting and good luck!

thanks autool. I do appreciate the other comments a lot and they were helpful, and expected when i saw that i entered the wrong shot. I think the crop was the main reason it was unfocused, it was definately sharper before.

I shouldnt talk because I find it hard to give technical comments myself coz Ive had my camera for only a month and dont know much. So to all who did find the time to comment..Thanks.

I still dont know how it was possible not to know which end is the head tho.

Thanks Autool.. ya, that's a valuable suggession of puting more details about the shot. Will keep that in mind.
On my entry I still don't think that the shot is dark on the top. It's just the color of the bird. Then again it's just me. :-)

Just commented on your pic Asit.

Feeling a bit sorry for Asit, I looked at his garden entry with the intention of commenting. However, like Autool, I found that actually the range of comments already there are more or less sufficient and certainly par for this site.

I think, Asit, you need to learn how to read comments carefully. Often, a single line will tell you a lot about how to improve your photograph.
