Looking forward to getting out on the streets and snapping away for this. I have always been gun shy with my camera for fear of confrontation, but hopefully this will snap me outta it.

This is a good challenge for most to get over qualms over taking photos in public areas, studying people, looking for a good candid, and 'street photography'. I too don't like confrontation but I emerged from my shell enough today to go to an local event to see if I could catch a few good candids.

The problem I encountered.

Living in a tropical zone too many damn people wear their sunglasses LOL. There are some good snapshots of people in a open market setting but those sunglasses obsure the eyes such that we see action but not full face emotion. Ah well, maybe the local paper would be interested in some of the shots.

I finally forced myself out of my comfort zone, with my husband along for back up. It was HIM that nearly experienced confrontations, as these out-takes hint at:))

My boyfriend has decided to sign up here and enter this challenge. He got what I think is a really great shot.

I have yet to find one... I still worry about upsetting people by snapping their pictures, so I don't get many candids. Hiding in my front window and trying to snap pictures of people walking down the sidewalk doesn't work so well, lol.
Maybe I'll enter Chrome instead. :)

Why not, if the out-takes don't hint at the photo?

Sorry Ben..been away for quite a while so haven't had time to catch up with all the new changes;)
Just to clarify...What is the difference between posting the images on the first page of this thread and my images? Is it because I called them outtakes and others didn't?

Grrrrrrr.... still no shots!!! Looks like I am going to have o wonder around tonight in search of a last minute entry!

Would suck if I can't get one and forfeit the next round of the tourney. :/

This is a good challenge to keep me from ever attempting to take candids again. Evidentally the public parks belong to bitchy soccer moms who think people with cameras are trying to steal their children's souls. Ugh, give me wonderfully uncomplaining landscapes, animals and things.

Question:

Would you all consider wildlife photos to be "candid," or do you feel that "candid" refers only to shots of people?

I think that catching anyone off-gaurd falls under the "candid" category, but wanted to guage the waters here.

I think most people typically prefer candid shots of people, but there have been some wildlife candids that really have done well. With wildlife, its better to catch the animal doing something unusual, not just perched in a tree or standing in a field like any other animal shot.

I would be amazed if a candid of an animal finishes well. Candids generally refer to people and most voters will reference that in their minds when they are voting.

I went to a dance concert. I got very good shots of the artist performing on the stage. Just wondering if it will be accepted as Candid?

What's people opinion on putting in a candid of children?

I took a few random candids shooting from the hip, aiming the camera behind me in a shopping centre and I got a few with kids.

Unfortunately, I have no idea who the parents are as this was just random and usually most of the candids I have done are people I wouldn't be worried about putting on the internet.

So what are people's opinion, submit candids of children or delete the image?

Thanks

If you feel that you had to shoot from the hip then I wouldn't post them.

I would not post a pic of children without the parents permission. If they were to come across the photo they may get upset. Espically if you don't tell them the reasons behind the photo.texttext

AMEN!!! I'm afraid we are going to see many, many snapshots. I hope I"m wrong.

Candid portraits are photographs taken of a person without their knowledge, or when the subject is momentarily caught off-guard. But make sure it is an image worthy of seeing AGAIN by the viewer!!

Good luck everyone.

As long as you are in a public place, it is perfectly legal to take pictures of children. If you need the specifics, read:

I would normally avoid photographing children but I accidently pressed the shutter as the camera was aimed backwards from my hip and the outcome was really good shot of a child.

I didn't submit in the end, I submitted a different candid and it's doing absolute crap, 3.5!!!! ( probably because it is more street photography than candid )

It's a real shame what some people have done to the hobby, there is probably lots of shots with kids out there but people don't want to publish them for the safety of children and I can totally agree with it.

I just wish the world was a better place and we would not have to worry about that element of society that prays on others.

Oh well, the photo is now deleted.

Regards and Thanks
