Wow.. I am honestly a bit surprised at my ability to enter a sucky entry, lol.
I guess it's just not a DPC-friendly entry. A comment would be nice, though. It'd at least clue me in a little. |

I'm definitely learning to listen to that girl! She suggested I reshoot and improve a past idea for Macro, then helped me on my final choice out of two. I can NOT believe I broke the top 20 with it!
She's never allowed to move out...... |
...can I borrow her-er, I mean- do you need a babysitter on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday? I could use a muse. =) |

I figure this'll be pretty low scoring. Not the most inspiring category. HA!
I'm down in the low 5's like the rest of you. Bring on something a bit more interesting. I'll go check out refraction.

I am dwelling in deep, dark depths of suckiness! Low 4's for me! That is the last two challenges now I have woken up first day to find low 4's!!! (and I am talking as low as the 4's can go!!!) I think I need a new hobby. |

I've discovered that every photograph I've taken for challenges in the past two months has scored worse than the one before. I've also gotten some very snide comments about people who would have given me a "1" for a photo, but gave me one more point because they thought they liked the caption.
This is extremely discouraging. I didn't sign up for a year of DPC for this. If I'm this unacceptable as a photographer, then maybe I should leave this board, sell my camera on ebay and go buy an instamatic or an SX-70 or something.
I mean, when I have to hope that a low "4" average is a good score for me, then that says something. I've tried to stay positive throughout all this, but apparently I'm going to resign myself to the fact that I'm a crappy digital photographer and that's all there is to it. |

Oh my...
This 'state' that you're in, where you feel like a complete failure, is something I am sure we can ALL identify with.
Look at almost every sport-related movie... the team sucks, down in the dumps, then a new coach arrives and eventually they regain hope and start winning... blah blah. You know the drill.
Fact is, at this terrible, dreadful stage, you must perservere. Yes, you paid for a year at DPC and that doesnt mean you will get red-carpet treatment all the time.
I saw in your profile you are a professional writer, (like me) and by that you must be used to critisism - good or bad.
You are not "unacceptable as a digital photographer", thats all in your head. You are sitting with a Nikon D70, and looking at your porti, you should stop treating it like a P&S and start experimenting with it.
Do a course to learn the camera. I'm not saying you dont know that already, but there are tips and tricks that you seem to overlook. Again, I am judging this by the few pics on your profile.
Shooting pics for DPChallenge is a different ballgame all on its own. If you cant please people here, it doesnt mean you cant please people outside DPC.
Friendly advice - don't take all scores and comments on DPC as the Alpha and Omega of your photographic career. It can be a killer.
So in essence, stop with the "I'm so worthless as a photog" routine and start using your head to shoot some pictures. :))
Dont try and shoot to please others. Shoot to please yourself first.
Hope this helps... in a weird kind of way... |

Hmmm, only the second challenge I've done, but the other was in the 4's also :(. Of course, I haven't had time to really concentrate on a challenge entry...........maybe when I get more time I will have some better challenge entries. I find that most of my photography is spur of the moment, unless I'm photographing a building, etc.

Don't let it get you down. I've been on this site since 2003. Most of my pictures never see 5. I've had a few make it that far. But I've still learned alot and I'm still learning. I don't have "good" equipment. But I do have fun. The scores mean nothing. This is a great outlet for your creativity. I currently have what I would consider my "best" picture ever in the "Yellow" challenge. I'm getting a horrible score. But I've had two really excellent comments that told me something I didn't realize. After checking with someone at home as to what they "saw" I now realize I'm color challenged, LOL. I admit, at first a few comments hurt, and sometimes they still do, but they are only the opinion of someone you don't know. |

I wouldn't write yourself off like that. Your sense of humor is great, for one... and your shots aren't bad. Post processing can make or break a photo on here, so how are you at that? It takes time to figure out what appeals to voters here. I haven't even figured it out yet, totally. But I take pictures that I think are good, and submit them. I got lucky on one, totally sucked at one, and the two I have entered now are being voted totally average. My biggest problem is lighting. I can't seem to get it just right.
There are tons of threads here that explain everything from how to hold your camera properly all the way up through post processing and saving properly. When I don't know how to do something, and can't find it myself, I bug everybody with forum posts til I get help. :D
Just remember.. don't let other people's view of art get you down. What's more important is that you feel your work is good. If you believe that your photos are great, then they are. Art is very subjective, and it always will be. Just keep in mind that with this site, technical perfection is a big deal. I take anywhere from 500-1000 pics a week, just trying to learn everything about my camera, settings, lighting, framing, etc.
Yikes, didn't mean to ramble on that way. Hope this doesn't come across as preachy. :/ |

Don't worry chuck this challenge is scoring very hard for me also, I think I will be lucky to stay above 4. Not that its a problem it wouldn't be the first time for me to score a 3, just move on to the next challenge.

Thanks everybody... sorry to vent like that, but I was just getting extremely frustrated. I'd re-process a photograph and then realize that I'd oversharpened it. I understood that, so I made sure the next photo wasn't sharpened - and that one scored lower. For Children's Toy, I uploaded - and removed - four different images after about 500 different shots and ideas. And at the last minute, I went with one - and that's the one's that scoring 3.4 and getting really rough comments.
I'm sure somewhere along the line I'll get lucky and hit a score of 5.1 or better. It's just right now I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall, and just watching for an entire week while my latest entry gets eviscerated - and knowing in the back of my mind that the next photo I take might score even lower. |

True, true....but sometimes it's hard to remember, especially with the challenges because you know others are judging it. Truth is, this is another reason I haven't entered more challenges - aside from the time issue. But, we all shoot best when we're not thinking about what others find appealing, but thinking about what we find appealing. Everyone has their own style. :) |

Personally I think there are alot of unhappy people who feel left out because of the little extra contests going on within the challenges. And they are voting angry and low. I personally have a couple of what I personally think are decent, not ribbon winners, but solid midpack shots that are scoring miserably. I think I am going to step away and take a hiatus from all of it until everyone settles back down. This is all suppose to be for fun people lighten up and enjoy it, or at least let the folks who want to enjoy it do so. Never vote angry and never go to bed mad.

Just shoot for you and have fun. One of my favorite quotes:
I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure--which is: Try to please everybody. -Herbert B. Swope

Me too. Mine is currently scoring just barely over 4.0, up from a rough start at 3.43 last night.. and yet when I posted the same photo in my blog to share with my friends, who are used to me posting a zillion and one photos a day AND plugging my inventory for sale, they ALL commented about how much they loved it and I even sold a print - which they never ever do.

not one comment, but there's 302 entries so I guess that's to be expected. This one is just so so for me. I'm not expecting much and frankly I'm surprised it's sitting where it is. |
