I got "no comment" as well, but look at it this way - if we all got the same comment and presumably the same score by this person, then no one is specifically hurt by this since it's a universal effect. The good photos will still win, eh? Who cares about a stupid troll? Seriously, they only do it because it gets such a huge response and in the end they don't matter a damn.

It's really not that simple this time.. there are currently a couple of side-competitions going on (MS Tourney and WPL league, and others), where a group of people have entered one of two open challenges. Those that were in Children's Toy would have been affected by this, where Refraction didn't seem to. This would cause a little bit of an advantage shift.

However, IF things go right, the low voting by the person(s) responsible will be tossed (if they haven't already), so it's all good. But that's *if*.

I'm not sure I have complete confidence in the vote dumping system yet :)

*EDIT* I am *NOT* suggesting anyone entered in Refraction is the perpetrator!! lol. Just getting that out there. I only wanted to point out why it's a bigger deal to some people.

And the troll evidently didn't get through all the voting, so even in Toys only some are affected.

My Childrens entry is doing pretty well and here are two interesting comments, maybe by the aforementioned person(s). I was amused :)

"gud"

"not bad."

I wouldn't sweat the scores/comments to much. Whether they are thrown out or not won't make to much difference. My question: do these two comments count as comments recieved? :) If I mark them helpful, will anyone even know? :) If a tree falls....

You guys know what I do? I only vote in challenges in which I did not enter. Works well to keep my objectivity in line.
Busy voting on the childrens Toy challenge. I must say that the quality of entries are lower than any challenge I ever voted in. Only one 10 so far. Plenty of 3's and 4's. Where a bell grapg is suppose to peak at 5 for a perfect distribution, my votes peak at 3,5. Shows that (in my eyes) the entries are lower quality.
I am only on 30% now and still going through them. Maybe it will improve.

Did not recognise any entries yet. No cheese (fotomann) and although there is a dog it is not a Pug.

Yeah, keep going. There's BOUND to be another 10 in there somewhere. ;-P

Got 3 10's, 4 9's 7 8's and approx 10 7's. Only 1 1's, couple of 2's loads of 3,4 and 5's.

Sigh, I guess nobody went for my birthday idea cuz it's only come up a li'l. Ah well, 5.6 for a picture I wasn't going to enter isn't too terrible. I know it's uninspired, was just hoping I might get some useful comments. But folks, there's still 36 minutes before my birthday's over to get your 10's in there! ;)
04/09/2006 07:09:55 AM · #135
Well I made it to 5.6 lol. Seems the "real" voters are coming in now. Thanks for the lift!

I really enjoyed this challenge, it was my third entry for a Challenge
and I really thought that I had come up with a Beltta !
The comments I have received have been very complimentry which has helped me to understand a little more about some of the mistakes that I have made.
Looking at it now I think I am going to get 5.300 which is an improvement om previous scores and I am pleased with my progress
so far.

Cheers.

Only 3 comments on an entry that's doing pretty well. Unusual.

I didn't enter the Toys challenge. but I have just finished voting on every photo submitted. Of nearly 300 photos, less than 30 are actually good photos in my opinion. I'm not whining or trying to bring anyone down! And I voted on a scale of 6-10 so as not to hurt anyone's scores.

But, I think the Toys challenge illustrates perfectly a trap we can all fall into.

I am sure almost every submitter enjoyed this challenge, because of the nostalgia of remembered toys. The meaning of their photos, while apparent to the submitter, was mixed up with their memory of play, youth, a careless time without worry or responsibility. Unfortunately the voters don't have that shared memory. And most of the photos are meaningless without it.

The lesson, from my point of view, is that we must remember to take pictures that are relevant and interesting, even without the context that exists in our own heads. Only then will they be relevant and interesting to an external audience, as opposed to precious to an audience of one.

A very good point, and spot on.
I'm also finding that a lot of the pictures may be of a toy, but they're not, in the description of the challenge, photographed "in an interesting and creative way." I haven't finished voting yet, but I've found quite a number of technically fine shots that aren't really anything more than a close-up of a toy just... there. There are a few great exceptions, though!

(still sitting solidly at 5.7something...)

Of all challenges I voted on for the past few months this is by far the worst-staffed. Can't believe how uncreative can people be. Actually, I can imagine the problems of doing a toy shot in a fun and photogenic way, but if you can't think of anything good - why supply mediocre?

Believe me one person's mediocre is another person's wow. Everybody, thankfully, wil see each photo differently and vote accordingly. So YOU may think they are mediocre but OTHERS will not.

Totally. My votes that I noticed range from 3 to 10. I know there'll be 1's and 2's in there as well. Evidently SOMEbody liked it a LOT!

But, as to why supply mediocre... For some of us less experienced photographers it may be as a learning experience. We may KNOW it's not great but can't figure out why and hope for some feedback that'll allow us to take the next shot that step farther.

And then there's some who just can't bear to let a challenge go unchallenged, no matter what the entry!

Btw, still hanging at the 5.7ish that I've been at since near the beginning...

If I've only gotten one vote since I last looked, it's pretty easy to figure out! Or if only 3 or 4, I can average... if it's 6.33, odds are there were two 6's and a 7.

(Hmmm, Nobody, another post needing editing now? ;) )

Okay, off to shoot Chrome, since I have a whole 5 and a half hours left!

Aye, hear that. I know my shot in particular is creative, but not the best tech photo out there by a few miles. I am, nonetheless, disappointed that my photo is scoring below a 5, because the premise is a great deal better than the zillions of broken doll macros, however well shot they may be. A good photo, in my system, is a shot that has both good - not necessarily perfect or even great - technical detail and outstanding composition.

Slightly off topic, I'm also disappointed with the proliferation of kids and skateboards in the Jump challenge... I understand that many people are here for technical criticism, but I would think that a site like this with a specific creative challenge and a limited time frame would weigh composition a bit more than it seem to do. I almost wish that there were two different rankings to issue, one for each, kinda like the old figure skating system..? Hmm.
