Just a placeholder today. :)

xianart, I'll try to send you a PM tomorrow with the steps I use. Mainly just doing some dodging & burning and some selective USM. I'm not sure how others do it, but there are a few folks here that I'd like to get their formula as well. :-)

There have been some great SP's here and some fun ones too. Feel like I know you all a little better after all this. Kinda sad to see it ending. ( I know, I'm a big sap!) :-D

I have day 27 up.

Now I'm down to only three days left, and I have two shots I feel obligated to do in that time period -- one that I promised someone I'd do even though it will be, in a small way, really embarrassing for me, and one that I really want to try and I will be kicking myself for ages if I don't try it in time to put it in this project. THE PRESSURE. :)

If you are, I am too. :)

Jenesis, I'd be really interested in the eyes-in-focus tutorial that vikas mentioned in one of his posts. Any chance you might put together a How Do They Do That, or something?

Day 23

Thought I forgot, didn't you?

It's up late, but that's because it's been a big day.

I present to you, the tired man.

I generally use the same method. dodging and burning and selective sharpening. (or selective blurring of *other* areas, heh). But I try and always have the eyes as in focus right out of the camera as possible.. and I do this by either taking 1400 photos until I get it right, or using my cable release to AF ;)

Well, yeah starting out with a sharp eye is always best. :) But it usually takes me a good 2000 shots or so, so you really got it down Arty! ;-)

Like Glen said, I usually try to make sure the focus point is trained on the eyes (less work in the PP that way). A remote has helped me with this immensely!!

Once I start processing, I enlarge the photo to 200% and dodge the whites of the eyes and over the pupil to taste. I have it set to hightlights at 4%. I'll also Burn the shadows, again at 4%, the pupil and other darker parts of the iris.

Then I use the magnetic lasso and selet the iris, copy and paste it into a new layer, making sure to set the Feather quantity to 2 or 3. I then do an unsharp mask on that layer. My mixture on this varys depending on the sharpness, clarity and detail of the pupil but a place to start is 20-40-2. But again, play around with these numbers as you'll get different looks.

A different way to bring out the details in the Iris, is to do a curves adjustment once you've copy and pasted it into it's new layer. Somtimes I do this as opposed to dodging and burning the iris. It can give you some great results. I do this before I apply the USM.

Then I repeat for the other eye. I put them in their own layers so that I can adjust the opacity of them later, just in case I went overboard (which is usually the case) :-) Once I'm done I merge the layers down.

Again, this is just my method. Sometimes it works great, sometimes there's not no help for me. :) I'm sure there are probably better ways to do this, but I don't know them. I usually just mess around with stuff until I find something I like. One of the downfalls of being self-taught. :)

Hope this helps and if anyone has a better way, or a more correct way, please share. :)

Sorry for the long post everyone, but since a couple folks have asked, thought I'd post it here for anyone else who is interested. Afterall, this site is all about learning and since I've learned loads here, I always like to help when I can.

Thanks for your informative post, Jen!

I finished day 23, but I won't publish it yet because it looks similar to the photo I want to use for the DPC Cinema challenge although I didn't use myself as a model for this submission. So I'll publish it when the DPC Cinema challenge is over.

I don't know how you can tell. They're all so good. Very inventive. Great lighting and great use of a Leitmotiv.

Day 25 is a done deal...not an exciting one, but done :)

xianart, I have been suggesting a 30 day shoot from the hip challenge, but no one seemed interested. I thought it would be a nice departure from my own face...which I am entirely sick of :)

A week off in between perhaps...

Day 24

I could probably do another one if others are up for it. But I suck at making decisions so I'll leave it up to ya'll. :)
