Deannda,
I posted this on my blog just after my Mom died this February.

"This is one of my first attempts at self-portraiture. I'm trying my hand at self-portraiture for a couple of reasons. First of all I've got family members asking for pics of me - and I tend not to like the ones other people take of me! Second is that I realized that there are very few really good pictures of my mom, and I think she avoided the camera for the reason I just mentioned. I decided that if something should happen to me I didn't want to leave my family wondering why no one managed to get any pics of me (since I'm usually the one behind the camera)."

Taking self-portraits as opposed to having portraits/snapshots done accomplishes a couple of things, especially for those of us who are not comfortable in front of the camera. Firstly, it allows you to play with lighting, posing, make-up, etc., without looking clumsy or awkward in front of a client. Secondly, if you can become more comfortable in front of the camera just through repeated exposure (and no, that wasn't meant to be a pun!), you will be more comforatble directing clients from behind the camera. But mostly, the best motivation for taking self-portraits when you're camera-shy is that you have more control over the situation and are more likely to produce pictures that you would want your family to have should anything happen to you.

There's probably a lot more reasons for doing this, but I wasn't sure anyone would bring this one up.

I am going to shave my head and face bear on saturday and then not shave or cut my hair for 30 days. I may even shave my eyebrows but who knows :)

If he does the same pose for every shot at the end of 30 days we can print them and make a flip book of his hair growing!

I'm pretty much afraid of getting my pic taken... I hate being in front of the camera. Combination of low confidence/weight thing. But I've lost a bunch of weight now.. so I think this would be a great exercise for me. :)

I'm all in. =)

..Oh, and I'm not shaving my head. :)

One of my best friends just lost his father last month, and we had the same problem. Over 20 people dug into old albums just to come up with a memory boards worth of photos. I realized going through the archives for the Bestof2002 contest, that there are in all - maybe - three photos of me from the last three years.

Count me in Di. I'm making a 2006 effort to conquer my shyness and halt my hermit ways. :) This could help.

Are we going to link our sites here? I have mine made (www.newness-of-life.com/30day) but I'll be fiddling with the template some more.

Also, I think I might do this just a bit differently -- I might go only till the end of April and then give myself a different challenge for May and so on, if that's OK and I can still be in. Just based on how this has got my creative juices flowing coming up with ideas for 30 different portraits of the same person, I think it would be really good for me to have something like this every month. I know people have done pets, etc., and I've always missed the start of those, but even if I'm on my own after this I think I'll try to keep it going for myself. Just have to start thinking of topics. :) 'a flower a day' would probably be, um, way too easy. :)

aww come on now.. we are who we are.. beautiful and unique and gifts to the world.. Its going to be interesting to see how the photo's evolve over the 30 days.. how we see and portray ourselves differently from the beginning to the end.. or on the flip side.. if there is much difference...

K seriously i'm getting nervous now.. Taking 30 pictures of myself that others are going to see is a huge thing & it just hit me.. you all are going to see this stuff... Now I have to come up with some creative stuff.. Just realized as well that my first day shot is going to be of me hung over *cd release party the night before* GAH!! that'll be lovely.. can only go up from there right? *blink* lol

Oh, geesh, here I was thinking I was pretty cool for coming up with 30 ideas -- which I now know are 30 terribly BORING ideas. Um, wow. I had to stop looking because I would have ended up just attempting to copy 30 of his shots... they are awesome.
