I would come anywhere in the world for this. Just to be involved I think would be a great thing. Las Vegas or Iceland would be great ! love this idea of a world wide GTG. :D

I may hold out for the next Interplanetary DPC Convention (IDPCC). If that's not coming up again soon, I'll put my vote in for Orlando :)
PS -- Hello to Zarko and Fleeblezorp from the last IDPCC gathering!

This is what I get: "Database error: Invalid SQL: SELECT * FROM polls WHERE poll_id=
MySQL Error: 1064 (You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1)
Session halted." |

I get the same error. I think if you dont chose Iceland the server doesnt like your answer and gives you that. :-)

ok.. so what do we need to consider ?
I can get a great price for the group at about 25 hotels all over the country, I can get conference rooms at most of the hotels, I can get group discount at 2 very good restaurants, one in the Capital and one in a small town in the southern part of the country.
return flight from NY is about $550 and return flight from London and Frankfurt is about €180
I don't think we have to worry about photography sites, just turn on your camera and you can get a great shot anywhere ;)
so what else is there to consider ?

That may be true, but what variables were considered when choosing these? Choosing the proper location will help guarantee a good attendance... I think it's worth looking into a little deeper...

Notably, the fact that many who might consider attending such a GTG might be making it their primary vacation of the year, with family in tow, and it might be just one component of that vacation. While Iceland would be terrific for the photographers among us, it might be less attractive to those bringing spouse and children.
Locations like Orlando and Cape Cod, on the other hand, offer many non-camera oriented attractions. Cape Cod, for example, could be a three-day stop on a longer exploration of the northeastern seaboard of the USA; Orlando, of course, offers a myriad of amusement opportunities, being chock-a-block full of great theme parks.

I have a family of my own and we never have to go to florida to have fun... there is plenty of things to do in Iceland for kids of all ages ( at least the kids that like being outside)
and in July-August there is a Tivoli open next to our biggest mall, we have gocart there to, plenty of daycare centers that are open for the public after 5pm and all weekends, we have a pettingzoo with farm animals, a familypark with all kinds of attractions for kids and so much more..
and there is one bonus... there is 0% chance of being robbed here, and 0% chance of your kids getting kidnapped..
the chance in Florida is about 20% of loosing your kids and about 50% chance of being robbed walking around with a BIG camera.
so Iceland is about the safest place in the world, it's one of the most beautiful and I don't think there is any chance of anything bad happening.. the only thing that happens here occationally is car accident, but even they are few and far between :)

I'm keen for iceland but hate to think how much airfare is from NZ to Iceland. If I came I would like to bring the family ( eeek quadruple that airfare!) and I'm sure there is plenty to do for spouses and children.

i want to see Iceland one day but this trip I would really love to go to the US. I know alot more people there and it would give me a chance to meet my penpal in Virginia.
If it were on the east coast somewhere that would be awesome! |

Theres no way I could do Iceland...I am still in for the Cape..
If for instance, if I can only manage 3 or 4 days off(likely), Cape Cod is feasible Iceland isnt.
Maybe there are other folks who can not afford the time,as well as the money? |

This sounds really cool and all, but I would vote more for Cape Cod than Iceland. For what reason?
Airfare from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota to Iceland: $1100USD
Airfare from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota to say Boston, MA: $230USD

1. Miles and miles of beaches. Bay beaches and Ocean beaches and Pond beaches.
2. Cycling and hiking.
3. Golf: Tons of miniature golf places. Tons of real golf too.
4. History and colonial architecture up the wazoo.
5. Provincetown; art galleries, funky people galore, tons of good restaurants.
6. Aquariums at Woods Hole
7. Easy driving distance from Boston, New Bedford (whaling museum), Providence, Newport.
8. Take a ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket Island.
9. Whale watching
10. Geologically, it's an unusual place. A sandbar in the middle of the ocean, lots of tidal marshes.
etc etc.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I noticed one early on that suggested a day with a lot of separate smaller gatherings, and I think that's a great idea. Obviously you'd get the most involvement that way. There could be an Iceland GTG, an East Coast NA one, a West Coast, an Africa... whatever. Those who can manage it can travel far afield; those who can't can stay closer to home. There could even be tiny satellite two-or-three-person GTGs in little localized areas. Sort of like, say, the immigration protests going on in the US, only all on the same day and nonpolitical. :)
Can you picture the load on the servers the next day, though, when everyone uploads pictures to their portfolios? :) |

Maybe we should do this in groups, like they do for New Year's celebrations? Have same-day GTGs all over the world with a special challenge or photo scavenger hunt in mind. East Coast America, West Coast America, Europe, Australia, etc. We'd still have a global DPC convention feel, but with more reasonable airfares.
Er, uh... what Rachel said.
