Sounds like a great idea. I think it would be a wonderful thing. I'm open for anywhere it's held, but like a lot of folks, I'd definitely have to do some saving :-) |

This is definitely an awesome idea. I was telling a friend last night that Iceland has no ugly scenery, and everyone who shoots photos there comes back with perfect shots, lol. :)
While I would love to go to Iceland, (and the 20 hrs of daylight!)the feasibility of it is tough for me. My boyfriend won't fly. New Zealand is another place I would *love* to go. A venue in Ireland or Scotland would be awesome too..
Realistically though, for me anyway, would be somewhere in the US. The Vegas idea is a good one, though it would need to be winter or else some of us would die of heat exhaustion, hehe.
The Cape Cod idea sounds great. I've always wanted to go up there, especially in the fall.
Really, almost anywhere on the east coast would be nice. I'm in Virginia Beach, though out in the northwestern part of Virginia is really gorgeous - the Blue Ridge Mountains, lots of Civil War sites, etc.
Anyone thought about California? Or Canada? |

Not sure where to go from here but let me see if I can sum up:
Locations up for discussion:
Iceland
Cape Cod
Orlando
Africa
New Zealand
Time:
1yr
2yrs
Topics
To be further discussed once above settled
Number of attendees
To be discussed
Any suggestions on how to ascertain probably the 3 most pressing issues being where, when & how many. I would really like to make this a reality but I need some definitive suggestions on how to move this along into something substantial. Can SC do a poll or something? Not sure...... |
OK all. I'm off to bed again (11pm here in Aus), so keep the discussion going and I'll look forward to reading the discussion the am. I would love some concrete suggestions on where to go from here to make this a happening thing.
Thanks

It's not too far north of NYC.
I left Florida on the map for orientation. :) |

I like Vegas for the ease of travel. Stuff to do without a camera. Nearby photo ops. |

Don't forget Denver has an international airport.
Rocky Mountain NP is only 1.5 hrs away.
Great Sand Dunes NP is only 4 hrs.
Arches & Canyonlands NP is only 5 hrs.
Maroon bells & Aspen is only 4 hrs.

When this idea's been discussed before, there was considerable sentiment to hold the first one in the Virginia/Washington DC area, since that's where the site/site owners are located, and there are considerable photo-ops in the area.
I thought there were some folks with skills/interest in doing some of the organizing, but I can't remember who they were.
If we set up parallel conferences (e.g. Europe, Iceland, USA), we might be able to time them so that some events (e.g. "keynote" address, workshops) could be shared via video-conferencing. |

I can help in setting up a GTG in Iceland.. at least I can take care of the hotels, cars, restaurants and such..
for a travelguide I know there are DPC members that have travelled more than I around Iceland.
the only thing that has to be done first is to decide wether it should be in Iceland or not, set the date, and find a practical number of participants...

Since someone brought up another location, I'd like to add the Canadian Rockies. (Jasper, Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National parks) The road between Banff and Jasper has plenty of photo ops next to the highway or just short 5 - 10 minute hikes from the road.
Just another option.

You know... Hawaii isn't bad either. Not just palm trees... We have mountains, volcanoes and flowing lava, the largest privately owned horse ranch in the United States (on the Big Island), Rain forests, Waterfalls, Snow on the Island of Hawaii (surf and ski in the same day). Oh, and there's the beach! The list could go on... |

This convention is an excellent idea. I would like to propose one minor suggestion though. In order to make something like this happen, it would probalby be a good idea to select 2 or 3 folks who will be in charge of coordinating it. That group can select the location and get the ball rolling on making it happen.

I'd love to go to Hawaii but at the moment just the flight costs about $3000 from Iceland, but the flight from NY to Iceland is about $300 ;)

I've been asking for volunteers since the start of this thread but it seems people are not ready to commit to be in control. I think we need a poll of the whole site, not just here on the forums, to decide a venue. Many people do not use the forums but are members and contribute.
I also think two venues with video-conferencing to link them as General ~E suggested, is an excellent idea.

I vote for Nepal, but I'm weird. Iceland would be nice too.
I'll never find the money to get to either, probably.

Somewhere in the 18 or so buildings comprising the Museum of Natural History I bet they have something on each of those ... I just think this is a convention, not a photo-op GTG -- I think it should be in an urban environment, with an emphasis on meeting other photographers and exchanging tips, not just a shooting field trip. |

You can't do that AND shoot cool things? Is Denver ( 2million +)not big enough of an urban area for ya?

I don't see why it can't be both; shooting trips during the day and evening talks. A two or three day conference in a hotel with option to bring family so some trips for them organised woould make the journey worthwhile.
Would this be for members only at least initially?
